From student to leader

Doctor of Music, People's Artist Quoc Hung was born in 1970 in Hanoi in a family where no one pursued art. His father died early, and his mother worked hard to raise her children.

From a young age, Quoc Hung showed his talent and devoted all his passion to art. He studied Cheo for 3 years and then joined the Hanoi Cheo Troupe, before going to the Hanoi Conservatory of Music to study opera under the encouragement of People's Artist Quy Duong.

He entered the Hanoi Conservatory of Music - the predecessor of the Vietnam National Academy of Music - in 1991. From intermediate to university, postgraduate and then successfully defending his doctoral thesis in music at this very school, he has devoted more than 3 decades of studying, teaching, performing and contributing to the largest music training cradle in our country.

Success came to Quoc Hung in 2000 when he won First Prize in the Second National Chamber Music Competition. In 2004, he received the Golden Cup of the Pyongyang Spring International Music Festival.

With a voice considered "special", Quoc Hung was invited to work at the Hanover Opera House but he still stayed in Vietnam.

In 2013, Quoc Hung made an album in memory of his father called Red Love Songs, consisting of 10 red music songs.

In 2017, Quoc Hung became a Doctor and Head of the Vocal Department of the Vietnam National Academy of Music. In 2019, he was awarded the title of People's Artist by the State.

On May 19, 2023, People's Artist Quoc Hung received a decision to be appointed as Deputy Director of Training and Scientific Research of the Vietnam National Academy of Music.

People's Artist Quoc Hung once shared, "I am lucky to work with a united and dedicated team. When I was in the Vocal Music Department, we always aimed to standardize the team, improve the qualifications of lecturers, and promote research and performance in parallel."

Currently, the faculty has 6 lecturers who have successfully defended their PhD theses, along with many Meritorious Artists, many of whom were once students of People's Artist Quoc Hung and are now famous, such as Meritorious Artist Hoang Tung, Meritorious Artist Truong Bac, singers Quang Ha, Nguyen Tran Trung Quan, etc.

As someone who pursued a mainstream musical path since his school days, Quoc Hung combined European classical vocal techniques with the spirit of revolutionary music.

During his performing career, the two songs that left the deepest impression on the audience through Quoc Hung's voice are Ta tu huong di len oi Viet Nam (Chu Minh) and To quoc goi ten minh - a poem by Nguyen Phan Que Mai - composed by musician Dinh Trung Can.

“I always work with all my heart”

In his new position, People's Artist Do Quoc Hung clearly identified his top priorities: "We are an art training environment, so training is always the number one task. Then there is performance - an important and inseparable part, helping to connect practice with theory, connecting artists with the public."

He said that the lecturers of the Vietnam National Academy of Music are all leading artists of the country, and are also the core force in major art programs. Therefore, promoting the capacity of the team and fostering a creative environment are the consistent goals in the development orientation of the Academy.

“We hope that the Academy will not only be a place for top-notch training, but also a place to nurture creativity, a launching pad for young talents, and a center for international connection and cooperation in music while still maintaining national identity,” he said.

Vietnam National Academy of Music - the largest music training center in the country - is the place that has witnessed the comprehensive growth of Dr. People's Artist Do Quoc Hung, from a young student to a researcher, performing artist, teacher, and now the helmsman of the very "house" that nurtured him.

“For over 30 years, I have always worked with all my heart and soul. I have tried my best to complete any assigned tasks - big or small. Now, I have more reason to contribute, because it is not only a responsibility, but also something I truly love and believe in,” People's Artist Do Quoc Hung shared.

At the age of 55, he embarked on a new journey not with great promises, but with quiet faith, with long-term commitment and substantial thinking in art education. Just like the way he chose an artistic path that was not noisy, but solid, attached to each student, each lecture, each performance, each breath of music.
