Who should avoid drinking coconut water?

For most people, drinking coconut water daily can help replenish fluid levels. Coconut water has no side effects unless consumed in large amounts and certain health problems occur.

The following people may experience problems consuming coconut water.

Diabetics. Nutritionist Ramalakshmi, a doctor working at Vasavi Hospital (India), noted: Coconut water often has a high sugar content, according to the Times Of India.

Coconut water may seem like the perfect summer drink, cool, natural and refreshing, but diabetics should be cautious, explains Ramalakshmi. Coconut water contains natural sugars that can spike blood sugar levels, especially if consumed in large quantities.

However, small amounts, around 100 - 150 ml occasionally - can still be fine if your sugar levels are stable. But it is best to consult a doctor if you want to drink water regularly in the summer.

People with kidney disease. Nutritionist Kacie Vavrek, working at the Ohio State Medical Center (USA), advises people with chronic kidney disease to avoid consuming too much coconut water.

Coconut water is high in potassium. Normally, potassium is excreted in the urine when blood levels are too high. But people with chronic kidney disease have a harder time eliminating potassium. Too much potassium can lead to a dangerous condition called hyperkalemia, which can be life-threatening.

People who are taking medication for high blood pressure. The high potassium content in coconut water can help lower blood pressure. Therefore, drinking coconut water on top of blood pressure medication can cause your blood pressure to drop dangerously low.

People taking diabetes medications. Coconut water might lower blood sugar. Drinking coconut water along with diabetes medications might cause your blood sugar to go too low.

People preparing for surgery. Coconut water may affect blood pressure and blood sugar control during and after surgery. Stop using coconut water at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery, according to WebMD .
