Seo Chong Ho Hydropower Plant officially went into operation in 2011, and since then an artificial freshwater lake at an altitude of 1,600 m above sea level has been formed. Taking advantage of ideal natural conditions with water resources and highland climate, in 2016 - 2017, some households pioneered the experiment of sturgeon farming by releasing cages on the lake surface. Realizing the economic efficiency, the number of households investing in sturgeon farming has increased rapidly. Currently, on Seo My Ty lake, there are about 500 fish cages, creating a large-scale aquaculture system, contributing to improving the economic life of the people here.
The investment cost for each fish cage is about 30 - 40 million VND (not including fish seed cost). There were times when the price of sturgeon remained stable, helping many people have high incomes. Sturgeon raised for 2 years, reaching a weight of 4 - 5 kg are popular in the market.
At this time, the price of sturgeon is not as high as before, fish farmers are facing many difficulties. The difficult consumer market makes people have to spend more money to maintain fish stocks. Local people hope that Sa Pa cold water fish products with outstanding quality and nutritional value will be widely promoted to consumers so that people can continue to maintain a stable fish farming area on Seo My Ty lake.
