Not requiring much care like coffee, pepper, durian, macadamia trees are gradually asserting their position, bringing joy to farmers in Krong Buk district, Dak Lak province, in which many young households have boldly converted ineffective coffee areas to grow macadamia.
In 2011, through understanding the market, realizing the increasing demand for nuts, including macadamia nuts, the family of Mr. Hoang Minh Hung (born in 1991, in Binh Minh village, Chu Kpo commune, Krong Buk district, Dak Lak province) decided to remove all ineffective coffee trees to grow only macadamia trees.
After 6 years of planting and caring, since 2017, his family's 2-hectare macadamia garden has provided a stable income.
In 2023, he harvested more than 8 tons of dried macadamia nuts, the selling price of dried macadamia nuts fluctuated from 180,000 - 200,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Hung shared: "To increase the fruit set rate, I just need to regularly prune the branches, create a canopy, remove diseased branches, and clusters of branches growing in the canopy so that the macadamia tree is airy and grows well. When the tree flowers, I need to pay attention to fertilizing and watering enough."
Unlike many local macadamia growers, Mr. Hung does not sell raw products but invests in dryers, seed separator machines, and vacuum machines to process macadamia into dried and packaged products for sale on the market.
At first, he struggled to find an outlet for his macadamia nuts, because this was a new crop in the locality and consumers did not know much about this type of nut. Through an introduction from friends, he transported macadamia nuts to Krong Nang district to sell.
Up to now, the dried macadamia and split macadamia products of Mr. Hung's family are known to consumers in other provinces and cities.
Or like the family of Mr. Nguyen Chinh Hoa (born in 1985, in village 1, Ea Ngai commune), realized that the growth and development characteristics of macadamia trees are very suitable for the climate and soil in their locality...
In early 2020, he boldly cut down old coffee trees to intercrop new macadamia varieties with high productivity and quality such as: OC, QN1...
From actual production, according to Mr. Hoa, macadamia trees have the characteristic of cross-pollination, so on an area, at least 2-3 macadamia varieties or more must be planted to improve pollination and fruit set.
At first, he did not master the techniques of caring for and preventing pests and diseases for macadamia trees, so the fruit set rate was low.
After that, thanks to regularly participating in agricultural extension training courses, agricultural technology transfer organized by the Youth Union in coordination with the Commune Farmers' Association and some units; visiting and learning about effective macadamia growing models in other communes to apply in the family's macadamia garden model.
Mr. Hoang Minh Hung (Binh Minh village, Chu Kpo commune, Krong Buk district, Dak Lak province) takes care of the macadamia garden.
Therefore, Mr. Nguyen Chinh Hoa's family garden is always green and lush, yielding an average of 60 - 80 kg of fresh fruit/tree/crop.
"Macadamia is a perennial plant that is easy to grow and care for, suitable for local soil and climate conditions. Planting macadamia in coffee gardens brings many dual benefits.
"Macadamia trees are taller than coffee trees in their third year, so they provide good wind protection. However, to achieve productivity, after harvesting, we must prune the branches and maintain moisture for the trees," said Mr. Hoa.
The entire Krong Buk district has 156.3 hectares of macadamia, including 18.58 hectares of pure cultivation and 137.72 hectares of intercropping with other crops. Currently, there are more than 56 hectares of products, with an output of about 129 tons/year; there is 1 macadamia product that has achieved 3-star OCOP.
Krong Buk district (Dak Lak province) has built a model of applying biological products in macadamia cultivation in the direction of biological safety.
The model of applying biological products to macadamia cultivation helps reduce production costs, ensure food safety, increase productivity and quality of macadamia nuts in Ea Sin commune with a scale of 20 hectares. This is a model of the district in agricultural production applying high technology and biosafety.
Ms. H'Nguop Nie, Secretary of the Krong Buk District Youth Union (Dak Lak province) said that accompanying young people on the path to self-reliance and career development, in addition to supporting knowledge, experience, information on market prices, and local policies in agricultural development, the District Youth Union also supports young people in borrowing capital to develop production, including borrowing capital to invest in macadamia planting.
At the same time, the Youth Union connects companies and businesses producing macadamia nuts to find stable output, opening up new directions in economic development for youth union members in the district.
