Mr Kim's visit to the shipyard was announced after North Korea tested a new submarine-launched strategic cruise missile on January 28.

According to Rodong Sinmun , the mouthpiece of the North Korean Workers' Party, the Pulhwasal-3-31 cruise missile flew for more than two hours and hit predetermined targets on an island in the Sea of ​​Japan.

Mr. Kim supervised the launch and called it a successful test, "of significant strategic significance in implementing the plan to modernize the military and build a powerful navy." The North Korean leader also inspected the process of building a nuclear submarine and discussed issues related to the production of new warships.

On January 30, the North Korean army successfully tested the Hwasal-2 strategic cruise missile, in a lightning counterattack exercise in the western sea of ​​the peninsula.

The missile tests come amid worsening relations between the two Koreas. Last month, North Korea's leader called South Korea its main enemy and warned that the country had "no intention of avoiding war".
