He is also the first Republican candidate to win the most popular votes in the past 20 years. In the 2016 presidential election, Trump won fewer popular votes than Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, but still won the election thanks to winning 304 out of 538 electoral votes. In the 1888 election, Cleveland, a Democratic candidate, lost to Republican candidate Benjamin Harrison. But unlike Trump, Cleveland won the popular vote by 90,000 votes.
