With his victory in the US presidential election on November 5, Donald Trump is almost certain to become the 47th president of the United States. He was also the 45th president from 2017 to 2021. He thus becomes the second person in the past 132 years, after Grover Cleveland, to serve two non-consecutive presidential terms. Cleveland served two terms, 1885-1889 and 1893-1897. He is also the first Republican candidate to win the most popular votes in the past 20 years. In the 2016 presidential election, Trump won fewer popular votes than Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, although he was still elected after winning 304 out of 538 electoral votes. In the 1888 election, Cleveland, a Democratic candidate, lost to Republican candidate Benjamin Harrison. But unlike Trump, Cleveland won the popular vote by 90,000 votes. He returned to the White House four years later with 277 electoral votes. In addition to winning two non-consecutive terms, Cleveland and Trump are both New Yorkers. Neither had served in the federal government or Congress before becoming president. In the run-up to their first election, both described themselves as political “outsiders,” promising to clean up the system in Washington, DC.
