Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky is currently in Washington DC to attend the 75th NATO Summit, which opens on July 9. Mr. Zelensky said he could not predict what Mr. Donald Trump would do if the leading Republican presidential candidate wins a second term in the election in November.
Speaking at an event at the Ronald Reagan Institute in Washington DC, Mr Zelensky said he did not know Mr Trump well but hoped US support for Ukraine would not change.
“I don’t know him well. I met him and we had good meetings when he was president,” Zelensky said. “I can’t talk about knowing what he would do if he became president of the United States. I don’t know.”
Mr Trump has often claimed that he could end the war in Ukraine in a day. However, Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya, has dismissed that claim. “The Ukrainian crisis cannot be resolved in a day or two,” Mr Nebenzya said, referring to Mr Trump’s statement about ending hostilities if elected.

There are about four months left until the US presidential election on November 5. On July 9, Mr. Zelensky also called on leaders not to wait for the election results but to act to support Ukraine.
“Everyone is looking forward to November. Americans are looking forward to November, in Europe, the Middle East, the Pacific, the whole world is looking forward to November and so is Russian President Vladimir Putin,” Zelensky said ahead of the NATO Summit, which brings together the top leaders of the 32 member states of the transatlantic alliance.
“It is time to come out of the shadows, make strong decisions, to act, not to wait for November or any other month,” the Ukrainian leader declared.
Earlier, speaking at a defense industry event sponsored by the US Chamber of Commerce, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan outlined a series of measures to increase US and NATO support for Ukraine.
In the coming days of the summit, NATO will announce a new military command in Germany headed by a three-star general to train and equip the Ukrainian Army, and appoint a senior representative in Kiev to deepen Ukraine's relationship with the alliance, Sullivan said.
