Technology company OpenAI has just officially launched Atlas - a web browser integrated with artificial intelligence (AI), marking an important step in its strategy to expand market share and challenge Google Chrome's dominant position in the global market.
The Atlas Browser allows users to open the ChatGPT toolbar in any window to summarize content, compare products, or analyze data from websites.
In particular, with "agent mode" for paid users, ChatGPT can interact directly with the website to fully perform complex requests, such as researching and planning shopping for a trip .
During a demonstration on October 21, OpenAI developers demonstrated Atlas’ capabilities as ChatGPT automatically searched for recipes online and purchased all the necessary ingredients. The AI assistant navigated to the Instacart website and added groceries to its cart—a fully automated process that took a few minutes to complete.
CEO Sam Altman described it as a "once-in-a-decade opportunity to redefine what a web browser is and how it's used." However, according to analyst Paddy Harrington from market research firm Forrester, OpenAI will face a huge challenge in "competing with a giant that has overwhelming market share."
Atlas has been released globally on Apple's macOS operating system and will soon be available on other operating systems such as Windows, iOS and Android. The move comes as OpenAI looks for new revenue streams, with the company currently having more than 800 million ChatGPT users, most of whom use the service for free.
Atlas's arrival also marks the intensifying competition in the AI-powered browser space, which already includes Perplexity with Comet, Brave Browser, and Opera Neon.
