* In eastern Pakistan, a collision between a passenger bus and a fuel tanker left at least 20 people burned to death.
According to local authorities, the accident occurred at 4:30 a.m. on August 20 on a road near the town of Pindi Bhattian, Punjab province. The bus was traveling from the southern port city of Karachi to the capital Islamabad.
Police said that in just 5 minutes, the fire engulfed the entire bus, killing 20 people on the spot and injuring 15 others, 3 of whom were in critical condition. Rescuers quickly arrived at the scene and took the injured to the emergency room.
There were about 40 people on the bus at the time of the accident. According to the authorities, the bus was traveling long distances between provinces and the driver likely fell asleep, leading to the collision with the oil tanker.
Poor roads, lack of safety measures and reckless driving are the main causes of many serious road accidents in Pakistan. Overloading of passenger vehicles and failure to follow traffic safety regulations also contribute to the high death toll.
Earlier this year, a bus fell off a bridge and burst into flames in southwestern Pakistan, killing at least 40 people.
* On the same day, Peruvian media reported that at least 13 people were killed and 5 others were seriously injured after a passenger bus plunged into a 150m deep ravine in Huancavelica province, southwest of the country.
The injured in the accident were taken to hospital by rescuers.
The accident happened early afternoon on the Los Libertadores route as the bus was heading to the capital Lima.
Videos circulating on social media show the bus almost completely destroyed.
