Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Van Hung: The pioneer of education in mountainous areas

As a teacher, scientist and manager, Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Van Hung is leading Thai Nguyen University to make a breakthrough with the aspiration to raise the level of regional higher education.

Recently, at the program “Glory of Vietnam”, Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Van Hung – Director of Thai Nguyen University – was one of 6 outstanding individuals honored for their outstanding contributions in the fieldof education and training. This is not only a recognition for him, but also a testament to the strong development of Thai Nguyen University, a major academic center in the Northern Midlands and Mountains region.

From a young lecturer, an environmental scientist , to the position of head of a key regional university, his journey is a vivid testament to his strategic vision and persistent commitment to the cause of educating people.

The journey of maturity of a highland intellectual

Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Van Hung is a Tay ethnic. He was born in 1974 in My Gia commune, Yen Binh district, Yen Bai province, a difficult area in the northern mountainous region. With the desire to advance through knowledge, he studied environmental science at the University of Agriculture and Forestry - Thai Nguyen University and graduated with honors in 1996. Immediately after that, he was retained as a lecturer, starting a journey of full commitment to the school where he grew up.

As a passionate researcher, he soon affirmed his ability in the field of environmental science and resources, a highly applicable field closely linked to practical issues in the Northern mountainous region. He has held many important professional positions such as Head of the Department of Environmental Resources Planning, Deputy Director of the Mountainous Environment Center, Head of the Department of Natural Resources & Environment...

From 2013 to 2015, he held the position of Principal of Lao Cai Provincial Community College - where he left many marks in developing training and expanding the scale of schools to serve local human resource needs. In 2016, he returned to Thai Nguyen University, assigned to be Party Secretary and Director of the Lao Cai Branch - a training unit playing an important role in the border area.

In addition to his management work, he is the head and participates in a series of scientific research topics, with many international and domestic publications. He has received many ministerial and provincial awards and is a typical face in the environmental science community.

Overcoming challenges, leading innovation at Thai Nguyen University

In September 2022, Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Van Hung was appointed by the Ministry of Education and Training to hold the position of Director of Thai Nguyen University, one of the three key regional universities in the country.

At the inauguration ceremony, he made a passionate speech: “The difficulties and challenges that always lie ahead will be enormous. I hope that we will share responsibility, each individual will need to be open-minded, creative and given every opportunity to contribute and build Thai Nguyen University into a prestigious key university in Vietnam and the Asian region.”

Thai Nguyen University currently has 13 member units, including many leading universities in the Northern region such as University of Medicine and Pharmacy, University of Industrial Technology, University of Education...

Under the direction of Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Van Hung, the school promotes university autonomy, enhances transparency in governance and develops staff. The Board of Directors is assigned to be in charge of specific areas: training, scientific and technological research, finance, facilities, quality assurance... to help the apparatus operate effectively, synchronously and scientifically.

One of the focuses he pays special attention to is developing international cooperation and applying science and technology transfer. From 2020 to present, Thai Nguyen University has implemented more than 300 topics/projects at all levels, published over 7,100 articles domestically and internationally, formed 42 strong research groups by industry and interdisciplinary, established 3 scientific service enterprises and 4 incubation and startup support centers.

Not only is he looking out to the world, he is also deeply passionate about education in disadvantaged areas. “We need to pay special attention to teachers in remote areas, ethnic minorities – those who do not have many opportunities to express themselves, and have to overcome many difficulties in the process of striving,” he once shared.

Education is not just about imparting, but about liberating.

As a person with extensive experience in training and educational policy making, Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Van Hung has repeatedly emphasized: “Education should not stop at imparting knowledge. It must be an environment for learners to explore knowledge, form independent and creative thinking, and develop comprehensive personality.”

He clearly believes that investing in education is the most effective investment, because knowledge is the foundation of sustainable development. Therefore, in strategic meetings at the University, he always emphasizes the role of learners, encourages member schools to improve programs, develop soft skills and innovative thinking for students.

In particular, he pays great attention to the young generation, the future owners of the country. “Youth is the most beautiful time, the golden time to develop talent. If educated and oriented well, young people will become the core force in the country's development,” he shared.

The aspiration he conveyed was not only to build a modern, integrated university, but also a place to foster a spirit of dedication, academic culture and social responsibility for each student and each teacher.
