On June 6, in Trieu An commune (Trieu Phong district, Quang Tri), the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Quang Tri coordinated with the Provincial Border Guard Command, Trieu Phong District People's Committee, Squadron 202 (Coast Guard Region 2 Command) to organize a launching ceremony in response to Vietnam Sea and Islands Week and World Oceans Day (June 8) in 2023.
Quang Tri province has a 75 km long coastline and a fishing ground of about 8,400 km2. Along the coast there are many beautiful beaches such as Cua Tung, Cua Viet... attracting thousands of tourists to visit and relax every year.
In addition, Con Co Marine Reserve is one of the areas with high marine biodiversity in Vietnam with the presence of many typical ecosystems of tropical seas such as coral reefs and seagrass.
The province's marine and coastal potential stands out with a number of valuable minerals such as natural gas, titanium, glass sand, etc. serving the mining and mineral processing industry and electricity development.
In addition, Quang Tri has the potential to develop maritime economy with Cua Viet seaport and My Thuy deep-water port. The coastal area has the potential to develop renewable energy such as wind power, solar power, etc.
However, Quang Tri province is also facing many severe challenges in protecting marine and island resources and environment; illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing is still happening; decline in aquatic resources and biodiversity; increased coastal erosion, marine pollution, especially ocean plastic waste pollution...
Through the launching ceremony in response to Vietnam Sea and Islands Week and World Oceans Day (June 8) in 2023, to focus on propagating and disseminating the Party's viewpoints and policies, the State's policies and laws, international laws on seas and islands; Vietnam's legitimate and legal rights and interests at sea; the position, role and importance of seas and islands...; strengthening control over the collection, transportation and treatment of waste and plastic waste along the coast and on islands; encouraging research on seas and islands, production and business activities that are friendly to the marine environment...; motivating, encouraging and helping fishermen feel secure in sticking to the sea, getting rich from the sea and contributing human and financial resources to protect the sovereignty of the sea and islands...
At the ceremony, representatives of the People's Committees of Trieu An, Trieu Van, and Trieu Lang communes signed a commitment to build a model of "Residential area protecting marine environmental resources".
The Organizing Committee presented 200 national flags; 10 gifts (worth 1 million VND/gift); 12 trash bins to people in Trieu An commune. Trieu Phong district awarded a certificate of merit to fisherman Vo Quang Lanh in Phu Hoi village, Trieu An commune for his brave act of rescuing people in distress at sea on February 22, 2023.
