Promoting heritage values with technology

Located in the harsh central region, Quang Tri is not only a place associated with the heroic history of the nation but also a rich and diverse cultural and heritage treasure.

The province currently has 562 tangible cultural heritages and 342 intangible cultural heritages, including four special national relic clusters, 20 national relics and 10 national treasures. Quang Tri has pioneered the application of digital technology in preserving and promoting heritage values, opening up a new direction for smart tourism and sustainable development.

One of the notable advances is the construction of the Quang Tri Heritage Digital Bank. This is a comprehensive digital data system including images, maps, 2D/3D videos , VR-360 virtual reality models and AR augmented reality of historical relics, scenic spots and unique festivals in the province.

Mr. Phan Tuan Anh, Deputy Head of the Department of Technology Management and Innovation, Department of Science and Technology, author of the project "Quang Tri cultural heritage digital banking solution to support smart tourism" shared that the digitization was carried out carefully and scientifically , through modern technologies such as GIS (Geography Information System), UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), 3D laser scanning, GPS (Global Positioning System), ArcGIS processing software to build a database to ensure accuracy, visualization, and vividness.

These data not only support conservation and tourism planning, but also help visitors access heritage in a new, more attractive and convenient way.

From the database of the Heritage Digital Bank, the group of authors has built a mobile application (App mobile) "Quang Tri Cultural Heritage", the product has been put on Google Play with 4 main menus: Map, relic sites, sightseeing, introduction and auxiliary features such as images, directions, 3D videos, virtual reality... Thereby, visitors can visit remotely, prepare a thorough itinerary or become a "home tour guide" for their own family.

Mr. Tran Minh Hung, living in Thanh Hoa province, shared that during his visit to historical sites in Quang Tri on the occasion of April 30, he scanned the QR code to download the application "Quang Tri Cultural Heritage" at the destinations such as Quang Tri Citadel, Vinh Moc Tunnels, etc. All information is displayed clearly and vividly, with the support of 3D images and videos, making the experience of family members, especially his children, more attractive, new and memorable.

The application “Quang Tri Cultural Heritage” has contributed to overcoming the fragmented and unconnected situation in introducing and promoting heritage. Instead of having a single experience when visiting relics as before, visitors can now systematically and seamlessly learn about historical relics in the province with just a few operations on their smartphones.

In recent times, the Department of Science and Technology has coordinated with the Center for Monuments Conservation, Quang Tri Museum and a number of functional units to conduct many studies such as: "Application of GIS technology to build an information system of historical and cultural relics and scenic spots in Quang Tri province"; "Building a system of Quang Tri Citadel relics and places commemorating the 81-day and night event in 1972 using GIS and 3D technology"; "Researching and building a digital database of special national historical relics of Quang Tri Citadel and places commemorating the 81-day and night event in 1972, contributing to supporting the development of tourism in Quang Tri"; "Researching the application of 3D laser scanning technology and GIS technology in collecting and building a database of Vinh Moc tunnels and Vinh Linh tunnel village system in Quang Tri", ... thereby building and adding to the digital bank of historical, cultural relics and scenic spots of the province.

Mr. Ho Van Hoan, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Tri province, emphasized that digitizing heritage is a breakthrough in conservation because of its intuitiveness, low cost, ease of preservation and quick transmission. More importantly, from 3D data, they can accurately restore damaged relics, serving the restoration work.

The current digital map system not only helps to look up geographical information, but also supports tourism development planning, building ecological, cultural, spiritual and educational sightseeing routes, associated with My Thuy, Cua Viet, Cua Tung beaches... This is the foundation for building a smart connected tourism model, thereby increasing the experience for tourists and management efficiency for authorities.

Acting Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee Hoang Nam said that in the coming time, the province will continue to promote digital transformation in the tourism sector, develop technology application products in the direction of approaching the 4.0 industrial revolution to serve the needs of people and tourists; strengthen information, propaganda, promotion and introduction of typical destinations of Quang Tri tourism, Quang Tri tourism products to tourists in many forms through mass media, fanpages and social networks, fairs, seminars, etc.

Despite some initial achievements, the journey of digitization and increasing the application of technology in preserving and promoting the value of cultural heritage in Quang Tri still faces many difficulties and challenges. The more digital technology develops, the more it requires large investments in funding, human resources for construction and operation.

Along with that, the use and application of technology products also requires professionals working in the cultural heritage industry to be trained and updated in digital transformation knowledge and skills.

The “Quang Tri Cultural Heritage” application has been uploaded to Google Play and received positive feedback from domestic users. However, the system does not yet have an English version, nor is it available on the iOS operating system - a platform widely used by international tourists and young people. This somewhat limits the ability to access, promote and spread heritage values beyond national borders.

Along with that, to complete the Quang Tri cultural heritage database, it is necessary to continue selecting and adding more information about typical intangible cultural heritages such as traditional festivals, revolutionary festivals, religious festivals; 10 national treasures of Quang Tri... to unify digital databases from State management units to serve as a basis for building and completing the Quang Tri cultural heritage digital bank.
