(QBĐT) - In recent times, with the attention, support and close direction of Party committees and authorities at all levels, together with the solidarity and efforts of cadres and people, the socio -economic situation, national defense-security and forest protection in ethnic minority and mountainous areas have made new developments, achieving many notable results. In particular, the linkage between socio-economic development and forest protection is identified as a key and continuous task, requiring greater determination from Party committees, authorities at all levels and people.
Thuong Trach is a particularly difficult border commune, located in the west of Bo Trach district with 3,209 people and 719 households. With many efforts from all levels, sectors, localities and people, the appearance of the commune has improved. The poverty rate has decreased from 77.25% (in 2021) to 65.37% (in 2023). The material and spiritual life of the people has been constantly improved, with an average income per capita of 14.6 million VND/year; the quality of teaching and learning has changed significantly, and the work of taking care of people's health, medical examination and treatment has been given attention.
Notably, the awareness of officials and people in economic development and forest protection has been raised, many households voluntarily registered to escape poverty sustainably. Currently, the commune has 118 households growing acacia with an area of 265 hectares; 29 models of raising cows, native pigs, black ducks in the form of barns...
Chairman of Thuong Trach Commune People's Committee Dinh Cu said that Thuong Trach Commune currently has an area of 73,384.95 hectares of forest and forestry land; 6,563.94 hectares of protective forest; 54,060.84 hectares of special-use forest; and 12,583.65 hectares of production forest. As a locality with a relatively large area of forest and forestry land compared to the whole district, the commune is aware of the importance of protecting and developing forests.
In recent years, the locality has done a good job of disseminating the Party's guidelines and policies and the State's laws and policies in the field of forest management and protection to all people. Thereby, raising awareness of the importance of forests to people's lives so that people can actively participate in forest management and protection, and protect natural resources and the environment.
At the same time, the commune mobilizes families and relatives to participate in forest protection, not to exploit forest products, encroach on forest land for farming and carry out illegal forest encroachment. Every year, the local Party Committee and government assign cadres and civil servants to hold regular meetings to educate people on how to burn fields and monitor the correct burning of fields, to prevent bad situations from happening.
In particular, the locality has made efforts to mobilize the community to protect and develop forests by combining the good traditions and customs of the community with the policies and laws of the State. The important thing is that up to now, realizing the benefits of forest development, people have abandoned the backward custom of burning forests for farming, enthusiastically participating in planting, caring for and protecting forests, creating high consensus in the community about responsibilities and rights when participating in projects to protect, conserve and develop forests.
In the coming time, Thuong Trach commune proposes that superiors consider and adjust the planning of 3 types of forests (from protective forests to production forests) in Con Roang and Troi villages; support funding for land improvement so that people can stabilize their cultivation on existing land areas, avoid deforestation and encroachment on forest land; install more mobile network transceiver stations (BTS) to facilitate communication for people, especially when sick, while ensuring national defense-security, social order and safety, and natural disaster prevention and control, rescue and relief in border areas...
Not only Thuong Trach commune, many other ethnic minority and mountainous areas in the province have had timely, effective and flexible solutions in the effort to link socio-economic development with forest protection. From there, raising awareness of people, especially ethnic minority people, in joining hands to protect forests and create sustainable livelihoods.
According to Deputy Head of the Provincial Ethnic Committee Phan Cong Khanh, recently, it is noteworthy that the work of land and forest allocation to ethnic minorities has been directed and resolved by Party committees and authorities at all levels. Localities have deployed the allocation of nearly 30,000 hectares of production forest land, the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park Management Board, protective forest management boards, Long Dai and Bac Quang Binh Industrial Forestry One Member Co., Ltd. have contracted more than 130,000 hectares of forest protection to ethnic minority households.
These efforts have contributed to limiting deforestation, increasing income for people in the ethnic minority areas, helping many households have more conditions to develop the economy, increase income, and sustainably reduce poverty. Determining socio-economic development associated with forest protection is one of the key tasks of localities in the ethnic minority and mountainous areas, therefore requiring more active participation of Party committees and authorities at all levels with flexible, creative and effective solutions, in which raising people's awareness of forest protection plays a key role.
