Ensuring a successful summer-autumn crop season.

In recent days, the more than 18 hectares of rice fields in Hop Loi village, Xuan Hoa commune, have been bustling with the sounds of people and machinery. On the large fields, machines are busy plowing and harrowing, while people are building embankments, fertilizing, and digging irrigation ditches… Many fields have also been sown with seeds.

Mr. Nguyen Chi Thuong, from Hop Loi village, said that after harvesting the winter-spring crop, he and other villagers hired plows to prepare and clean the fields, drying the entire rice paddies. The water supply for irrigation is always guaranteed, making production very favorable. The fields in Hop Loi village are near the Ba Nuong dam, so they receive water earlier; his family has over 3 sao (approximately 0.3 hectares) of land that has already been planted.
Not far away, Ms. Dinh Thi Lanh, along with a group of other women from Hop Loi village, was sowing rice on a plot of land nearly one sao (approximately 1000 square meters). According to Ms. Lanh, the PC6 rice variety yielded a good harvest last year, so her family continued to plant this variety this year. Her family had prepared all the seeds and other supplies beforehand, and thanks to sufficient water, they completed the planting earlier than expected.
Mechanization of production has contributed to increasing crop yields in Minh Hoa district.
Mechanization of production has contributed to increasing crop yields in Minh Hoa district.
According to Nguyen Van Bay, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Xuan Hoa commune, the entire commune has over 400 hectares of cultivated land, including nearly 70 hectares of rice fields. During the recent winter-spring crop season, the commune planted over 66 hectares of rice, with a yield of only 45.5 quintals/hectare, falling short of the plan. Therefore, the commune is determined to ensure a successful summer-autumn crop to guarantee food security. Since the end of May, the commune has provided water to farmers for the main planting season. With a comprehensive irrigation system, 100% of the commune's rice land is not left fallow. The rice varieties widely cultivated are PC6 and QC03. The summer-autumn planting season is directed to be completed early to avoid drought at the beginning of the season and flooding at the end.
In Quy Dat town, sowing has been completed, the rice fields are lush and green, and farmers are focusing on pest control, especially controlling golden apple snails and rats. In the fields of residential area 4, Ms. Dinh Thi Hoa is busy irrigating her rice paddies. She said that during the last winter-spring season, her family cultivated more than 3 sao (approximately 0.3 hectares) using a new variety provided by the local government, but the yield was low, not enough to cover the cost of fertilizer and plowing. This season, she is using the PC6 variety, diligently monitoring the growth and development of the rice plants, hoping for a bountiful harvest with favorable weather and high yields.
To ensure timely planting and early harvesting of the summer-autumn crop to avoid flooding, the Minh Hoa District People's Committee has instructed the People's Committees of communes and towns to direct farmers to clean up the fields and prepare the land for planting as soon as the winter-spring rice crop is harvested. They should use short-day and ultra-short-day rice varieties with a growth period of 85-95 days, including the main varieties: PC6, Ha Phat 3, SV181, HN6, DV108... to ensure safety in production.
For the 2025 summer-autumn crop season, Minh Hoa district plans to plant nearly 900 hectares of various crops, including 500 hectares of rice, over 15 hectares of peanuts, approximately 150 hectares of corn, and over 100 hectares of various vegetables and legumes.

For maize, the main varieties that are drought-tolerant and high-yielding include: NK6101, NK6275, NK7328, CP512, glutinous maize varieties HN88, ADI668. High-yielding and drought-resistant mung bean varieties such as: DX044, DX208 are also used. Peanut varieties L14, SVL1, L29 are also used.

In addition, Minh Hoa district also directed localities to develop plans for water-saving irrigation and drainage right from the beginning of the season and to have plans for water storage and rational water use, ensuring the irrigation water requirements for summer-autumn crop production.

According to Nguyen Bac Viet, Chairman of the People's Committee of Minh Hoa District, based on the district's guidelines, localities should proactively arrange crop varieties and develop specific, flexible planting schedules suitable to the conditions of each region and each type of crop. Each locality should structure its crop with 2-3 main rice varieties. In each field, only 1-2 rice varieties should be cultivated to facilitate land preparation, planting, care, irrigation, pest and disease control, and harvesting. For areas at risk of drought or with insufficient irrigation water, it is necessary to proactively switch to dryland crops with low water requirements, arranging crop conversion suitable to soil conditions, farming practices, and market demand; and planning concentrated production areas with the same crop group to facilitate irrigation and drainage management.

With decisive leadership from the Party committees and authorities at all levels, and proactive responses to adverse weather conditions, farmers in Minh Hoa district are determined to strive for a successful summer-autumn crop, contributing to the achievement of productivity and output targets as planned.
