“A Tourist's Guide to Love” on Netflix: Spreading the beauty of Vietnam

On April 21, the image of an impressive and fascinating Vietnam will be sent to audiences in 190 countries and territories worldwide through a film on the online film platform Netflix. The official premiere of this film took place on the evening of April 18 in Hanoi .

According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, the premiere of the film “A Tourist's Guide to Love” (Vietnamese title on Netflix: A Tourist's Love Journey) took place at the Hanoi Opera House, organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (AmCham) in coordination with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam, the US Embassy in Vietnam and Netflix Group. The event is part of the 10th anniversary of the Vietnam - US Comprehensive Partnership.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong highly appreciated Netflix's efforts in promoting the image, beauty and culture of Vietnam to friends around the world through the film "A Tourist's Guide to Love".

According to Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong, this will be a premise for Netflix in particular and international filmmakers in general to have more ideas in producing films in Vietnam. The Deputy Minister expressed his hope that in the near future, there will be more international film activities in Vietnam to go hand in hand with promoting the image of Vietnam widely around the world.

Expressing gratitude for the support of the Vietnamese authorities throughout the filming of “A Tourist’s Guide to Love”, US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper affirmed that the film is of great significance as it is released at the right time to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Partnership. The film’s launch is a testament to the successful cooperation between Netflix and the Vietnamese Government in the creative economy sector, while also laying the foundation for activities to promote the Vietnamese brand in the international market.

This is the first international film licensed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to be filmed in Vietnam during Tet and spring 2022, right after Vietnam successfully controlled the Covid-19 epidemic, with the participation of experienced Vietnamese and international actors.

The film, shot to Hollywood standards, recreates the beauty of local landscapes along with the beauty of Vietnamese people and culture through 6 main locations: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hoi An, My Son and Ha Giang.

On the evening of March 28 (Vietnam time), Netflix released a trailer introducing the main content of the film.

The film is about Amanda's journey to regain balance - a travel specialist (played by Rachael Leigh Cook) after breaking up with her lover. Amanda chose Vietnam as the destination "to find a new person in herself". During the trip, she met Sinh - a Vietnamese tour guide (played by Scott Ly). At Sinh's request, Amanda had a different journey than planned to learn more about the lands and cultures in Vietnam.

In the film's trailer, scenic spots such as flower lanterns on the Hoai River, Hoi An ancient town, My Son Sanctuary (Quang Nam), My Khe beach (Da Nang), terraced fields in Ha Giang, peaceful images of Hanoi, Ben Thanh market or the bustling, modern life of Ho Chi Minh City... appear dreamlike and impressive.

“A Tourist's Guide to Love,” directed by Steven K. Tsuchida and produced by Dustin Nguyen, will be released worldwide on Friday, April 21. The script was written by Vietnamese-American Eirene Donohue, inspired by her own travels to explore her roots. The production team hopes the film will recreate a part of the rich and vibrant culture of Vietnam.
