Applying technology to Vietnamese films helps improve the technical quality of the work, thereby participating in the world market.
The horror film "Ghost in the Palace" directed by Pom Nguyen and produced by Nhat Trung, released on March 7, has grossed over 149 billion VND (according to Box Office Vietnam) in the Vietnamese market. Although the film has received mixed reviews about its content, this is a rare Vietnamese film released in 4DX format and Dolby Atmos sound standard.
Complete and immersive
In particular, the 4DX format is a film format enhanced with weather effects (rain, wind, thunder, fog), realistic shaking movements thanks to multi-dimensional seats. Commercially launched in 2009, 4DX supports both 2D and 3D formats. In Vietnam, this technology is available at some CGV theaters in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology, creating a multi-dimensional sound effect by increasing the width, depth and height of the sound field.
Producer Nhat Trung said that the film has been purchased for screening in a total of 23 countries and territories, including many places that require high technical quality of the film such as the US, Australia, South Korea, Taiwan (China), New Zealand, Canada... "Quỳ nhập trang" was also premiered at the same time as Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan (China) on March 7. The film was shown in South Korea from March 19 and in the US from March 28. Mr. Kim Young-min, producer of "Exhuma", expressed his satisfaction with the quality of the film, especially the filmmaking techniques.
The previous success of the film "Ma da" has given Vietnamese film producers the opportunity to sit down with many partners, opening up technical and technological requirements and demands in addition to the story and script. "We made many changes when making the film "Quy nhap trang" such as filming with 8K standard cameras, providing high resolution and sharp images. Regarding the sound, we also approached the Dolby Atmos standard as requested by many international partners" - producer Nhat Trung shared.
Before "The Devil Enters the Earth", the film "The Billion Dollar Kiss" by director Thu Trang, released on the occasion of Lunar New Year, was also the first Vietnamese film to be shown in IMAX format. This is the most advanced film projection technology in the world today, from impressive projection room design to high-quality sound and image effects. Audiences will enter the world of the film in the most complete and immersive way.
Audience experience enhancement
Investing in technology and improving image and sound quality is not only to meet the requirements of international partners but also to enhance the audience experience.
Director Thu Trang affirmed that she had invested perfectly in the image and sound during the production of "Billion Dollar Kiss", thereby creating impressive experiences for the audience. Producer Nhat Trung added that "updating and investing in applying new technology in filmmaking is necessary to enhance the audience's experience. This will be the trend in the near future of Vietnamese cinema".
In addition to investing in improving image and sound quality, Vietnamese films are also increasingly approaching special effects, virtual studios and other technologies. In particular, computer-generated imagery (CGI) technology has become popular in the Vietnamese film market in many film genres, especially horror, spiritual, fantasy and science fiction films. Films that invest heavily in this technology include "Claws", "Sun People"...
In the movie "Claws", the filmmaker invested heavily in the image of the giant bear named Mat in the movie with a CGI budget of up to 30%. Meanwhile, Vietnamese movies such as: "Flip side 6: The fateful ticket", "Flip side 7: A wish", "The sun person"... used virtual production technology.
This is a relatively new technology in Vietnamese cinema. Virtual film studios are a blend of traditional filmmaking with real-time CGI image simulation technology and digital technology, creating an interactive, engaging environment for visual storytelling.
Investing in the right and sufficient technology helps filmmakers save time, costs, and meet the requirements of international partners. Of course, investing in technology is just one part of the journey to create a cinematic work, contributing to the success of a film's revenue.
According to experts, films that invest in audio and visual technology will help increase the audience's enjoyment. When films are shown in foreign markets, where audiences are used to watching works with standard filming and sound, Vietnamese films will not be "broken" in terms of technology.
"I think in the future, Vietnamese filmmakers need to focus on investing in technology because the level of Vietnamese audiences is increasingly high. To conquer Vietnamese audiences and have the opportunity to expand Vietnamese films internationally, this investment is inevitable," said screenwriter Dong Hoa.
