Deputy Prime Minister requests verification of natural forest destruction case in Quang Ngai

On June 5, the Government Office issued an urgent dispatch regarding Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang requesting the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province to direct agencies to verify and clarify the case of natural forest destruction to open an official road that occurred in Pho Cuong commune, Duc Pho town, Quang Ngai province.

Accordingly, the urgent document sent by the Government Office to the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province stated that from May 31 to June 3, a number of press agencies reported on the destruction of natural forests in Duc Pho town during the construction of the North-South expressway.

The Deputy Prime Minister requested the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province to direct relevant agencies to verify and clarify the content of the reflection. Report to the Deputy Prime Minister before June 10.

Previously, the press had many articles reflecting the Deo Ca Group's construction of a service road to construct tunnels 2 and 3 of the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway through the natural production forest of the KfW6 project, in sub-area 334, Pho Cuong commune, Duc Pho town.

According to the report of Duc Pho Town Forest Protection Department, the road was opened through the forest, including natural forest area. Duc Pho Town Forest Protection Department determined that the forest area destroyed to open the road was about 1km long at lot 25, 26, compartment 8, sub-area 334 of the KfW6 project. The area of natural forest destroyed was more than 7,541m2.

According to the report of Duc Pho Town Forest Protection Department, at the location where the forest was destroyed, there were previously 9 households in Thanh Son village, Pho Cuong commune participating in the KfW6 project and were granted land use right certificates by Duc Pho Town People's Committee. However, before 2016, this group of forest owners sold the entire area to Mr. Nguyen Van Bon in Pho Khanh commune, Duc Pho town and then Mr. Bon leased it to Deo Ca Group.

Working with the Duc Pho Town Forest Protection Department, Mr. Bui Hong Dang - Executive Director of Construction Package 02, belonging to Deo Ca Group, said that the company has signed a contract to lease 15 plots of production forest land (with a Certificate of Land Use Rights) from Mr. Bon for construction.

In a recent press interview, Deo Ca Group confirmed that the service road was opened based on the existing forest product transport route. The purpose of this service road is to transport equipment and materials for the construction of tunnels 2 and 3 of the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway. The representative of this Group also said that they do not know which project the forest belongs to!?
