Return green to the land
Although the Cay Nhan iron mine in Tu Quan commune (Yen Son) is still in operation, some areas within the mine have been leveled, replanted with trees, and restored to the environment by Tuyen Quang Iron and Steel Company Limited - the licensed mining unit. Instead of the usual vacant lots in mining areas, this area is covered with the green color of acacia forests.
The Bac Lung tin mine area (Son Duong) has been covered with green forest.
Mr. Nguyen Van Dat, the company's CEO, said: With the goal of restoring the environment as the mining proceeds, the company has developed a project to partially close the mine to level the land and replant trees. In addition to the Cay Nhan iron ore mine, in the Cay Vau village mine area, Thanh Long commune (Ham Yen) on an area of 30 hectares, the company has also completed afforestation and restored the environment.
Ms. Dang Thi Gai, Cay Nhan village, Tu Quan commune (Yen Son) shared: She is very happy that the enterprise is responsible, exploiting to where, restoring the land, returning the green color to that place. For that reason, she and many people in the village strongly support and participate in preserving and protecting the planted forest area in the exploited mine area.
Not only Tuyen Quang Iron and Steel Company Limited, Tuyen Quang Non-ferrous Metal Joint Stock Company also seriously implements the responsibility of restoring and rehabilitating the environment after mining. Ms. Luong Bich Hiep, Deputy Director of the Company, said: In 2013, the enterprise was licensed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to exploit tin ore in Son Duong town (Son Duong). As an open-pit mine, the mining process will more or less affect the current status of the land and the environment. To minimize the impact on the environment, the company has strictly implemented measures to demarcate the protected area, regularly monitor, promptly detect incidents, and thereby adjust mining activities. On that basis, the enterprise also implements the policy of restoring the environment wherever it is exploited by leveling the land to its current status and planting forests in the exploited area.
According to the assessment report of the Inspectorate of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in 2023, before completing the mine closure procedures in the Bac Lung tin mine area, the entire mine area has been reclaimed, with a forestation rate of over 90%.
Closely monitor and supervise environmental restoration work.
Mineral exploitation is an activity related to temporary land use, so after the end of the mining process, businesses must carry out land reclamation and environmental restoration, contributing to limiting negative impacts on the environment of the area after mining and renovating, returning the land area to society to serve the next development goals.
Comrade Vu Viet Hung, Head of the Department of Geology, Minerals and Water Resources, Department of Agriculture and Environment said: The general goal of land reclamation and environmental restoration is to ensure environmental safety and the health of local people in the mineral exploitation area. For each different area and type of mineral exploitation, there will be different specific goals of land reclamation and environmental restoration such as: Restoring the land area to its natural condition with full environmental values as before; recreating ecological values and land use similar to before mineral exploitation activities; building completely different land use purposes compared to the original land use status before exploitation; converting areas with low crop productivity values into safer and more stable areas.
According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, as of mid-May, 103 licenses were granted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the Provincial People's Committee to mining enterprises, of which 42 mines after the expiration date, the enterprises have prepared plans to close the mines and properly carry out the responsibility of land reclamation and environmental restoration according to regulations. The Department of Agriculture and Environment continues to inspect and supervise the work of land reclamation after mining, avoiding the situation where enterprises "forget" their responsibilities after the expiration of the mining license.
