During the historic days of July, Tung Coc Bridge (Dong Loc Town, Can Loc, Ha Tinh ) was a red address in the memory of the People. Here, the story of the People's Armed Forces Hero Vo Trieu Chung remains intact in the soul of the trees and the water veins...

Historical story by Tung Co bridge

“Crossing” a small stream in the middle of the fiery land of Dong Loc, Tung Coc bridge has been mentioned in the heroic verses of poet Pham Tien Duat: “Tung Coc, Tung Coc, Tung Coc, Tung Coc/ After crossing this bridge, we go uphill/ In front of us is Dong Loc Junction/ At night, bombs fell and flares filled the sky/ But it still did not stop our convoy from going in and out”.

The place name “Tung Coc” in those verses is Tung Coc Bridge (also known as Tung Coc Bridge) located on National Highway 15A. Although the bridge is only 14m long, it is an important traffic artery. No one knows how many vehicles carrying troops, weapons, and food have been carried to the front line by the bridge, serving the war against America.

In 1968, the war against the US entered a fierce phase. When Dong Loc land became a “bomb-filled fire pit”, Tung Coc bridge also became a fiercely attacked point. To cut off traffic between the North and South, the US continuously mobilized all kinds of aircraft and dropped hundreds of bombs into the underground sewer of Tung Coc bridge.

Company 557 - N55 - P18 was tasked with filling bomb craters, rescuing trucks, clearing magnetic bombs and other unexploded bombs on the road from Dong Loc Intersection to Bang Bridge. This road is about 5km long but has many bridges such as Toi Bridge, Doi Bridge, Tung Coc Bridge, Mang Bridge, Khiem Ich culvert...

The Company Commander and Party Cell Secretary of Company 557 - N55 - P18 at that time was comrade Vo Trieu Chung (born in 1935 in Truong Tien village, Thuan Thien commune, Can Loc district). Born in difficult circumstances, he was soon enlightened about the revolution and always had a fighting spirit. When he grew up, he actively participated in youth union activities and was admitted to the Youth Union.

In 1963, he was honored to be admitted to the Party. In 1965, he joined the Youth Volunteers and experienced the Quang Tri battlefield, then returned to Ha Tinh in 1967, serving in combat at Linh Cam pumping station. In 1968, he was assigned as the Company Commander and Party Cell Secretary of Company 557 - N55 - P18, with the task of securing the vital route from Dong Loc Intersection to Bang Bridge. On August 24, 1968, while on a bomb disposal mission at Tung Coc Bridge, comrade Vo Trieu Chung heroically sacrificed himself.

Missing the one who stays behind

The war is long gone, but memories of People's Armed Forces Hero Vo Trieu Chung remain intact in the memories of his relatives and comrades.

On a historic day in early July, visiting the house of People's Armed Forces Hero Vo Trieu Chung in Truong Tien village, Thuan Thien commune, we met the martyr's eldest son, Mr. Vo Van Chung (born in 1959). Lighting incense on his father's altar, Mr. Chung sadly recounted short memories of his heroic father.

Mr. Vo Van Chung - eldest son of People's Armed Forces Hero Vo Trieu Chung.

Talking about his father, Mr. Chung choked up as he looked up at the altar and confided: “My father died when I was just 9 years old, so all the stories about him were told by my mother. Last year, my mother also left this world, so I became the one to keep those memories.

I only remember that my father often came home to visit at night, but at that time there were no lights like now, so I could not see his face clearly. When I woke up in the morning, my father had already left. That period of time did not last long because after a while my father sacrificed himself. I was still luckier to meet my father, and I loved my youngest brother the most because when my father sacrificed himself, he was still in his mother's womb. My mother alone worshiped her husband and raised my three brothers to adulthood.

Mr. Vo Van Chung and Mr. Nguyen Viet Bien recalled memories of People's Armed Forces Hero Vo Trieu Chung.

Still remembering his childhood friend, Mr. Nguyen Viet Bien (born in 1943, Truong Tien village, Thuan Thien commune) wrote many heartfelt poems to remember the heroic sacrifice of martyr Vo Trieu Chung.

Mr. Bien recalled: “Chung was a thin, dark man, but he was quick, active, hard-working and very studious. At that time, because he had been educated and had some knowledge, I taught Chung. In the activities of the Youth Union, he was very active, and he wholeheartedly helped anyone who had any work. Because of that, he was admitted to the Party. When he received the decision to join the Party, he ran to show off to my mother, because she was also a Party member.”

Every time she talks about her teammates and Captain Vo Trieu Chung, Ms. Hoe can't help but feel emotional.

Sharing the same hardships on the battlefield with martyr Vo Trieu Chung, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoe (born in 1948, residing in Thuan Hong residential group, Duc Thuan ward, Hong Linh town) - Squad leader of Squad 5, Company 557 - N55 - P18, tearfully recalled the memories with her brother, her close comrade.

Ms. Hoe recalled: “It was August 20, 1968, we received an order from our superiors informing us that a special military convoy was passing through Dong Loc T-junction, so the unit had to urgently clear Tung Coc bridge at all costs. At dawn on August 24, 1968, American planes frantically bombed Tung Coc bridge, making the road clearance even more dangerous and difficult.

To solve the above problem, comrade Vo Trieu Chung organized an extraordinary Party cell meeting. At the meeting, the hearts of many party members were burning, everyone was eager to go to bomb disposal even though they knew they would have to risk their lives. At this time, Chung stood up and said: “Comrades, I already have 3 children, I go to bomb disposal, if anything happens, I have a child to “lean on”, but comrades: Bon, Tuan, Bao do not have wives, so it is a great disadvantage. Therefore, comrades, please let me do this.”

Along with comrade Vo Trieu Chung was comrade Phan Van Bon. That was the last time Ms. Hoe saw her comrades because 30 minutes after the bomb exploded, the two men on duty heroically sacrificed themselves, and the body of Captain Vo Trieu Chung was dissolved into the dust of his homeland.

In 2015, the Party and State posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces to martyr Vo Trieu Chung.

In memory of martyr Vo Trieu Chung, in 2015, the Party and State posthumously awarded him the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces, to the emotion and pride of his relatives, comrades and villagers.

Today, Tung Coc bridge has been rebuilt but still retains its simplicity. Houses are lined up on both sides of the bridge, and a new rhythm of life has emerged. To commemorate the sacrifice of Hero Vo Trieu Chung, in 2021, the Provincial People's Committee named the street "Vo Trieu Chung" in Dong Loc town.

The war has long since ended and those who remained like Mrs. Hoe, Mr. Bien or later generations like us will forever remember the heroic sacrifice of People's Armed Forces Hero Vo Trieu Chung. And every July, millions of hearts turn to Dong Loc to remember and pay tribute to the heroic martyrs who fell for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland.
