International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said on January 17 that the organization's inspectors at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant continue to report daily explosions in the immediate vicinity of the plant.

"At the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, where the situation on the front line of the conflict remains volatile, the IAEA inspection team reported multiple explosions occurring daily, including at close and medium distances from the plant," the IAEA chief said.
Mr. Grossi also noted that the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant “still has problems with external power supply.”
He also emphasized that the factory management board has informed the inspection team about the completion of the repair of the voltage stabilizer for the 750 kV transmission line and its successful operation on December 31, 2024.
Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry said that on January 5, the Ukrainian military attempted to attack the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant with eight unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), all of which were destroyed by air defense systems. When fragments from one of these UAVs fell, a fire broke out on the roof of the plant's training center.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, later stated that Russia expects objective assessments and a clear response to the actions of the Kiev authorities from the IAEA leadership.
As for Russia, on January 17, the country's Ministry of Defense announced remarkable information about the progress of the military campaign - when it said that its forces had regained 63.2% of the territory occupied by Ukraine in Kursk province, western Russia.
Accordingly, in the first two weeks of January, the Russian army successfully recaptured four settlements in the area.
The move is seen as a major step towards reversing the situation following Ukraine's surprise invasion on August 6, 2024.
In that offensive, Ukrainian forces crossed the border and seized a piece of Russian territory, seen as a valuable bargaining chip for Kiev in potential talks to end the conflict.
