Seize the historic opportunity

Located in the southwest of the country, Phu Quoc is the largest island in Vietnam with an area of about 580 km² (with 22 large and small islands), possessing a rich natural ecosystem, a long coastline and many famous landscapes. With a temperate tropical monsoon climate all year round, and a developed tourism infrastructure system, Phu Quoc is an attractive destination on the international tourism map.

To date, the city has attracted investment in 320 tourism projects, with a total capital of more than 388 trillion VND. The accommodation system currently has 484 establishments, more than 26,000 rooms, including 27 4-5 star hotels with 12,703 rooms. Large corporations such as Vingroup,Sun Group , Bim Group, CEO Group... have made their mark with iconic projects such as Safari Zoo, Hon Thom cable car, Hon Bridge..., contributing to affirming the pearl island brand in the international arena.

In 2024, Phu Quoc will welcome more than 5.9 million visitors, accounting for 60% of the total number of tourists in Kien Giang province; including nearly one million international visitors. The impressive figures above are a testament to the strong development potential of the locality, especially in the context of preparing for national and international events such as the APEC Summit Week 2027.

According to Chairman of the People's Committee of Kien Giang Province Nguyen Thanh Nhan, to prepare for this major event, the province has developed a list of 29 urgent projects, with a total investment of more than VND220,000 billion, mobilizing capital from many sources, including private enterprises. "This is a historic opportunity for us to simultaneously promote infrastructure and service development and attract strategic investment, improving the quality of life for Phu Quoc people," said Mr. Nhan.

Key projects include: Waste and wastewater treatment plant; Domestic water supply plant; expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport; upgrading of An Thoi International Seaport; renovation of main traffic system, underground electricity and telecommunications; construction of APEC Multifunctional Complex... These are key projects to improve service capacity, not only for APEC events but also as a foundation for Phu Quoc's long-term development.

According to the Kien Giang Provincial Department of Tourism, to meet the needs of about 12,000-15,000 delegates from 21 APEC member economies, Phu Quoc needs 15-20 five-star hotels, including at least 30 presidential suites and 50 suites for ministers and senior officials. In addition, a series of three- to four-star accommodation facilities are also being prepared to serve the press, businesses, and logistics forces.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Dinh Thien, member of the Prime Minister's Policy Advisory Council, said: "APEC 2027 is a great opportunity to affirm Vietnam's strategic position, as well as turn Phu Quoc into a center of socio-economic cooperation and global trade." With the participation of many international delegates, the event will attract strong foreign investment flows, promoting the fields of tourism, real estate, retail, services, etc.

However, with a huge amount of work and less than 20 months of preparation time, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Dinh Thien suggested that the Central Government should give more initiative to localities, design specific mechanisms to shorten the process, and create conditions for priority projects to be implemented quickly and effectively.

Towards sustainable development

These days, in the south of Phu Quoc Island, the construction atmosphere is taking place urgently. Barges and specialized equipment are continuously constructing the foundation of the 57-hectare APEC Multifunctional Complex, including a 3,500-seat Conference and Exhibition Center, an International Press Center serving 4,000 reporters, a multi-purpose auditorium, APEC Square...

It is expected that by 2030, the airport will have a capacity of 10 million passengers/year, and by 2050, it will increase to 18 million passengers/year, capable of receiving wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 747 and Airbus A350.

Notably, Sun Group is accelerating the construction of Aspira-Aspiration Tower, a new symbol of Phu Quoc, expected to be completed before APEC 2027. Mr. Dang Minh Truong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sun Group, said: “We are committed to accompanying the government, investing in key items to contribute to promoting Vietnam's image to the world through the APEC 2027 event”.

To ensure progress, Kien Giang province has directed functional sectors, investors, and Phu Quoc city government to focus highly, while seeking direct support from the Central Government, Government, ministries, and branches.

Chairman of Phu Quoc City People's Committee Tran Minh Khoa said that the city is speeding up site clearance, supporting resettlement, and compensating in accordance with regulations to hand over clean land to investors. Along with that, the city is strengthening urban beautification, improving synchronous infrastructure, and handling inadequacies in land use planning, construction order, etc.

In addition, the local government also launched the movement "Day for Phu Quoc Environment", associated with the goal of building "Green-Clean-Beautiful-Safe and Civilized Phu Quoc"; propagating and mobilizing people to raise awareness, preserve the image of a friendly and hospitable locality. Mr. Nguyen Van Be, a resident of An Thoi ward, shared: "I am willing to move architecture and fruit trees to make way for construction. Everyone understands that this is an opportunity for Phu Quoc to develop, a source of pride for every islander."

Up to now, Kien Giang province has basically completed the initial preparations for major projects. Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Nhan said: Preparing for APEC 2027 is a key political task in the coming period.
