Doctors have just successfully performed surgery to remove a 'huge' ovarian tumor weighing up to 5.5 kg from a 19-year-old female patient.

On September 22, Quang Ngai General Hospital 2 ( Kon Tum Ward, Quang Ngai Province) announced that it had successfully performed surgery to remove a giant ovarian tumor weighing 5.5 kg from a 19-year-old female patient. After surgery, the patient's health is stable and she is recovering well.

The patient is Ms. H. (in Dak Ha commune, Quang Ngai province). According to her family, over the past year, Ms. H.'s belly has shown signs of gradually getting bigger but it did not cause pain, so her family did not take her to the doctor. About a month ago, Ms. H.'s belly grew abnormally large with a feeling of heaviness and discomfort, so she went to the hospital for a check-up.

Through testing and imaging, doctors discovered a large tumor in the pelvic area, with high CA125 levels. The patient was diagnosed with a large ovarian tumor and was monitored for ovarian cancer.

Doctor CKI Dinh Huu Hoa, Head of the Oncology Department, Quang Ngai General Hospital 2, said that because the tumor had grown too large, doctors predicted before surgery that it could stick to many organs in the abdomen such as the colon, small intestine, pelvic wall, etc., with a high risk of blood loss. After consultation, the team decided to perform surgery to remove the tumor.

The surgery lasted for several hours, and doctors successfully separated the tumor from the colon and right ovary. The tumor measured about 20 x 35 cm and weighed 5.5 kg.

According to Dr. Hoa, ovarian cysts are common in older women, but can still appear in young people. Doctors recommend that women with abnormal signs such as abdominal pain, rapid abdominal enlargement, heaviness, or pressure causing constipation, urinary retention, etc. should go to the doctor early for timely diagnosis and treatment.
