A residential area in Quang Hanh ward (Cam Pha city, Quang Ninh) had a power outage in the middle of the night, keeping people awake.

According to the People's Committee of Quang Ninh province, at present, 4/7 thermal power plants in the area are operating all units at a capacity of 97 - 100%. The remaining plants are operating at 50 - 60% capacity due to problems with the units or having to reduce operating capacity to ensure the output cooling water temperature meets environmental standards.

In addition, statistics on electricity production in the province in May are estimated at 3.6 billion kWh, an increase of 23.12% over the same period in 2022; in the first 5 months of 2023, it reached 16.7 billion kWh of electricity, equal to 15% of the total electricity production of the whole country and equal to 35% of the electricity production of coal-fired power plants nationwide.

At the meeting, representatives of thermal power plants requested to be guaranteed coal supply to maintain stable operation at 100% capacity of the plants, and recommended support to ensure environmental regulations to maintain stable operation of the plants.

Due to the huge demand for electricity, there has been a shortage in the entire North, leading to Quang Ninh Electricity having to rotate power cuts in residential areas to ensure safety.

People rushed to buy rechargeable fans and generators.

Faced with the above situation, the acting Chairman of the Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee, Cao Tuong Huy, requested that thermal power plants in the area strengthen technical solutions to ensure safe operation of thermal power plants; fully prepare materials, equipment, and human resources to promptly fix problems (if any) and put generators into operation to generate electricity as soon as possible, meeting the highest requirements.

In particular, the acting Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee also requested the Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group and the Dong Bac Corporation to provide enough coal for thermal power plants; including calculating and providing additional reserve coal in June and the following months, ensuring that power production is not interrupted due to lack of coal.

As Thanh Nien has reported over the past three weeks, thousands of people in Quang Ninh province have struggled with rotating power outages, disrupting their lives.
