African swine fever appeared in Quang Tri province from mid-May 2025, in 65/78 communes and wards. Authorities have destroyed over 105,000 pigs with a total destroyed weight of over 6.6 thousand tons.
With many efforts in epidemic prevention, by the end of November 2025, 53 communes and wards of Quang Tri province had been free of the epidemic. Of these, 21 communes and wards had announced the end of the epidemic, 32 communes and wards had passed 21 days.
Mr. Tran Cong Tam, Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Quang Tri province, said that the fact that many communes and wards have basically controlled African swine fever is a positive sign. However, the animal husbandry and veterinary sector recommends that livestock farmers continue to strictly implement disease prevention and control procedures to prevent recurrence and only restock under disease control conditions, when permitted by specialized agencies.
If people want to re-raise pigs after being infected with African swine fever, they must ensure safety conditions such as: enough time for the pigsty to be free of pathogens, ensuring hygiene, source of breeds, food, and especially needing to implement bio-security measures for pig farming.
In the coming time, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Quang Tri will continue to work with localities where pigs are still being culled due to epidemics to direct and guide the complete handling of outbreaks; continue to take samples at livestock farms to monitor and support pig sales; propagate and guide pig farmers to implement epidemic prevention measures according to the instructions of superior agencies.
