This is an affirmation of a dynamic provincial urban area, a testament to the strategic vision in urban development of the entire Mekong Delta region.
1. With a natural area of 104.46km², including 11 administrative units, Rach Gia plays a central role in the economic, cultural and social development of Kien Giang province. The city is located at the gateway of the Mekong Delta, adjacent to the Gulf of Thailand with 20km of coastline, creating great potential for the development of marine economy and tourism.
The city’s transport infrastructure is invested synchronously with the road, waterway and air systems, including Rach Gia airport, two large passenger ports and important routes such as National Highway 80 and Lac Hong Avenue. These projects not only help connect Rach Gia with localities in the region but also expand international trade, especially with countries in the ASEAN region.
The development of Rach Gia does not stop at transport infrastructure but is reflected in its impressive economic growth rate. In the period 2021-2023, the city's average growth reached 9.41%/year, a figure that is outstanding compared to many other localities in the region. Rach Gia is one of the four dynamic urban areas of the Mekong Delta, contributing to the development of the region and the whole country. With the orientation of becoming a modern center of trade, sea tourism, marine economy and fisheries, this city has been building a brand of a model, modern and sustainable coastal urban area.
The achievements of Rach Gia are not accidental but are the result of long-term strategies and methodical investment. According to Decision No. 241/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister on the plan to upgrade the national urban type for the period 2021-2030, Rach Gia has been identified as a type I urban area for the period 2021-2025. This demonstrates the Government's trust in the role and potential of the city. In addition, Decision No. 1024/QD-UBND of Kien Giang province clearly affirmed the nature of Rach Gia as the economic, cultural,educational , medical and scientific and technological center of the province, as well as the center of marine economy and commercial services of the coastal area of the Mekong Delta.
2. However, to achieve the standards of a Class I urban area, the city needs to maintain its growth momentum and complete important criteria on urban infrastructure, environment and quality of life. At the conference to evaluate the Rach Gia Urban Classification Project on December 27, Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Viet Hung emphasized the need to continue reviewing, supplementing and completing criteria, especially on the development of infrastructure for health, education, environment and public services. The evaluation council also recommended that the city focus on developing green, smart urban areas, responding to climate change and ensuring a balance between economic development and environmental protection. These are major challenges that Rach Gia needs to overcome to truly become a sustainable Class I urban area.
The focus on green and smart urban development has opened up many opportunities for Rach Gia in attracting investment capital and building modern infrastructure projects. The project to upgrade Rach Gia airport to level 4C is a typical example, helping to enhance international connectivity and create leverage for tourism and service development. With a strategic location in the national key tourism area of Phu Quoc - Ha Tien - Rach Gia, the city has great potential in exploiting and developing sea tourism, contributing to diversifying budget revenue and improving people's lives.
In recent times, Rach Gia has focused on economic development on the one hand, and on the other hand, on preserving and promoting cultural and historical values. The city has organized many heritage conservation programs, encouraged the development of community culture and built the image of a dynamic but unique urban area. These have created a difference, contributing to enhancing the competitive value of Rach Gia on the urban map of Vietnam.
3. The event that the Appraisal Council unanimously scored the Rach Gia Urban Classification Project with 86.35/100 points, meeting the criteria for a Type I urban area, is an important turning point in the city's development journey. This is not only a recognition of the continuous efforts of the government and people, but also opens a new and promising development phase.
Rach Gia’s journey to becoming a first-class city is a story of determination and strategic vision. With its available potential, along with the right investment and continuous efforts, Rach Gia is gradually transforming itself to become a leading economic, cultural and tourist center. This is the pride of the people of Kien Giang, demonstrating the strong development of coastal cities in Vietnam in the new era.
