In the early hours of June 9, Ribery appeared at the Allianz Arena to watch Portugal become the first team in history to win the Nations League for the second time after defeating Spain in a penalty shootout. During the match, Ronaldo scored his 138th international goal, equalizing 2-2 in the 61st minute.
Shortly after the goal, a video emerged showing Ribery being targeted by fans as they celebrated Ronaldo’s goal. A social media user posted a clip of the former French star interacting with spectators in the stadium.
Before the match, Ribery responded to Ronaldo's comments, when the former Real Madrid and Manchester United player said that only Champions League winners have a chance to win the Ballon d'Or. "That was the biggest injustice in my career. I was not inferior to Ronaldo or Messi that year," Ribery said.

In other interviews, Ribery described Ronaldo's win as "a political choice" and even expressed his "disgust" at the decision. He asserted: "It's unfair. It was a great season for me and I should have won the Ballon d'Or."
Ribery had a chance to win this individual award in 2013 while playing for Bayern Munich, but ended up winning the Bronze Ball and finishing behind Lionel Messi and Ronaldo. That year, Ribery won five titles with Bayern Munich, including the Champions League. Ribery made a strong impression with 22 goals and 18 assists.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo was awarded the Golden Ball despite not winning any titles with Real Madrid in the same year.
