Groningen's management made no secret of their delight at welcoming Robben back. |
Robben, 41, was once an icon of Groningen before moving abroad to play and shine at Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich. After retiring from playing in 2021, Robben spent time learning and honing his coaching skills, preparing thoroughly for his new role.
Robben's decision to coach Groningen's U14 team was not surprising to fans of the former Dutch international. This is because, over the past few years, Robben has consistently shown a deep attachment to and a desire to contribute to his childhood club.
"In his role as coach, Robben will focus on developing young talents, passing on the experience from his peak playing years. FC Groningen has high expectations for his ability to build a playing style, inspire fighting spirit, and nurture passion in young players," Groningen's announcement stated.
In July 2019, Robben left Bayern Munich and announced his retirement. However, because he missed football so much and felt he could still contribute, Robben decided to return to his hometown and join FC Groningen.
After two years of dedication to his hometown club, Robben officially retired. Thus, after Robin van Persie, Robben will be the next famous name from the Dutch national team of the 1980s generation to pursue a career as a coach.
Currently, Robin van Persie is making a positive impact as manager of Feyenoord, helping the club to have a good chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season.
