Groningen's board of directors did not hide their joy in welcoming Robben back. |
Robben, 41, was once a symbol of Groningen, before going abroad to play and shine at Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. After hanging up his boots in 2021, Robben spent time learning and perfecting his coaching skills, carefully preparing for his new role.
Robben's decision to coach Groningen's U14 team is not surprising to fans of the former Dutch international, as over the past few years he has shown a deep commitment and desire to contribute to his boyhood club.
"As a coach, Robben will focus on developing young talents, passing on his experience from his years at the top. FC Groningen has high expectations for his ability to build a style of play, inspire fighting spirit and nurture passion in young players," Groningen's announcement said.
In July 2019, Robben left Bayern Munich and announced his retirement. However, because he missed football so much and felt he could still contribute, Robben decided to return home to join FC Groningen.
After two years of dedication to his hometown club, Robben officially hung up his boots. Thus, after Robin van Persie, Robben will be the next famous name of the Dutch national team from the 8X generation to pursue a coaching career.
Currently, Robin van Persie has left a positive mark in his role as Feyenoord's captain, helping the club qualify for the Champions League qualifying round next season.
