Colorful Spring Festival

Quang Ninh boasts hundreds of unique historical sites and festivals, mostly held in the spring, attracting large numbers of locals and tourists. On February 2nd (the 5th day of the first lunar month), the Tien Cong Festival 2025 was inaugurated at the Tien Cong Temple, a national historical and cultural relic (Cam La commune, Quang Yen town), commemorating the 591st anniversary of the Tien Cong pioneers who opened up the land of Ha Nam Island (1434-2025). This is one of the spring festivals that kicks off a series of spring festivals in Quang Ninh and is the largest and most distinctive spring festival in the Ha Nam Island region, organized to remember the Tien Cong pioneers who contributed to the exploration , reclamation, and establishment of this island.

The 2025 Tien Cong Festival took place in a joyful and enthusiastic atmosphere from February 2nd to 4th (the 5th to 7th day of the first lunar month) with many cultural and sporting activities and rich folk games. Particularly, on the 7th day (the main day of the festival), a ceremony was held to carry the elderly in a palanquin to the Tien Cong Temple, reflecting the rich Thang Long culture of the coastal region. This year's Tien Cong Festival featured three collective processions to bring elderly people aged 80, 90, and 100 from the three communes/wards of Yen Hai, Phong Coc, and Phong Hai, carried by their children and grandchildren in palanquins to the Tien Cong Temple to offer sacrifices to their ancestors in this unique festival honoring the traditional cultural beauty of "Drinking water, remembering the source" of the people in the Bach Dang coastal region…

Mr. Duong Van Mui (95 years old, from Quang La commune, Quang Yen town) happily shared: "I live in Thai Nguyen with my children and grandchildren, but every year during the Tien Cong festival, I return to my hometown to participate. My health is still good, so this year my children and grandchildren carried me on a palanquin to the Tien Cong temple to show their respect and gratitude to the Tien Cong deities, and also to pray for health and peace for myself, my family, and the community. The weather during the festival days was quite beautiful, making it very convenient for people and tourists to participate."

This is the second year that the Organizing Committee has included the "Little Girl of Cua Suot" story, associated with the legend of the Cap Tien Temple, in the opening ceremony.

The festival took place in a joyful and enthusiastic atmosphere with many activities, contributing to spreading among all levels of the population a sense of reverence and gratitude for the contributions of their ancestors and forefathers; at the same time, promoting the cultural and historical value of the relics in implementing the policies of the Party, State and province on building an advanced Vietnamese culture with a strong national identity; building a culture and people rich in Quang Ninh's identity, contributing to creating endogenous resources and driving forces for sustainable development…

Immediately after the Lunar New Year holiday, many localities in the province held major festivals. On February 6th (the 9th day of the first lunar month), Dong Trieu City also opened the Ngoa Van Spring Festival 2025, which will continue until the end of the third lunar month. Ngoa Van is one of 14 important historical sites belonging to the Tran Dynasty historical site in Dong Trieu, which has been classified as a Special National Monument by the Prime Minister. This year, the ceremony included rituals praying for national peace and prosperity, drumming and bell ringing to officially open the festival; and an incense offering ceremony at Ngoa Van hermitage and pagoda, a sacred site of Truc Lam Buddhism – where Emperor Tran Nhan Tong practiced and attained enlightenment.

Despite the cold weather and light rain, the festival attracted a large number of locals and tourists. Ms. Le Thi Truc (from Nam Dinh province) said: "The Ngoa Van Spring Festival had a very large number of participants on its opening day, but everything was very well prepared and organized. Transportation, traffic, and festival etiquette were ensured. Here, we were able to immerse ourselves in unique cultural activities and folk games, and visit the exhibition of typical OCOP products of Dong Trieu City…"

The Yen Tu Spring Festival (Uong Bi City) also held its opening ceremony on February 6th (the 9th day of the first lunar month). This is a major festival nationwide and the largest in Quang Ninh province, lasting throughout the three spring months. Besides spiritual activities, the Yen Tu Spring Festival is also attractive due to its unique cultural atmosphere with folk games; performances of traditional arts and musical instruments; dragon and lion dances; and experiences of the cuisine and culture of the Dao Thanh Y ethnic community at the foot of Yen Tu mountain…

During the Lunar New Year and the early spring days of the Year of the Snake 2025, the weather was quite pleasant, and religious and spiritual sites in the province recorded a large number of people and tourists visiting for worship and sightseeing, such as: Cua Ong Temple (Cam Pha City), An Sinh Temple (Dong Trieu City), Cai Bau Pagoda (Van Don District), Xa Tac Temple (Mong Cai City)... Particularly in the eastern region of the province, where a large number of ethnic minorities live, traditional festivals with distinct cultural characteristics are taking place, such as the Luc Na Temple Festival - one of the largest festivals in Binh Lieu during spring, which will be held on the 16th and 17th of the first lunar month. Along with traditional rituals, this festival is integrated with spring celebration activities such as cultural exchanges, folk games, and competitions in ethnic sports... contributing to community cohesion.

In many localities within the province, agricultural production plays a crucial role in socio-economic development, therefore, special festivals are organized during the spring season. A prime example is the Spring Production Festival in Hai Dong commune (Mong Cai City) in 2025. The festival, filled with enthusiastic labor, reflects the people's aspirations for good health, a prosperous life, and abundant growth.

This is one of the unique folk cultural activities that encourages and highlights the role of agricultural production in people's lives, contributing to sustainable rural development, linked to the urbanization process towards ecological agriculture, modern rural areas, and civilized farmers. Right at the festival, farmers in Dong Hai commune went to the fields to prepare the land, sow seeds for the spring crop, and harvest potatoes from the winter crop.

On this occasion, agricultural communes and wards in Mong Cai City also simultaneously organized the "Going to the Fields Festival" with the wish for favorable weather, abundant harvests, and prosperity.

People participate in the Fishing Festival at Ben Giang Fishing Port (Tan An Ward, Quang Yen Town) on February 3rd (the 6th day of the first lunar month).

Meanwhile, in Quang Yen town, the fishing festival was recently held at Ben Giang fishing port (Tan An ward). The festival aims to launch the spring fishing and aquaculture season; encourage fishermen to compete in labor and production; and revive the traditions, customs, and unique characteristics of the people engaged in fishing and aquaculture in the area. For fishermen, the fishing festival is an important cultural and spiritual activity, praying for favorable weather conditions so that they can have a bountiful harvest of shrimp and fish. Immediately after the ceremony, hundreds of boats and ships were anchored, waiting for the right moment before setting sail.

Mr. Pham Phuc Truc (Zone 2, Tan An Ward, Quang Yen Town) said: The Cau Ngu Festival is one of the four major festivals of Quang Yen Town. This is also the 15th consecutive year the festival has been organized, becoming a cultural and religious product that attracts a large number of local people and tourists. From here, it creates a joyful and enthusiastic atmosphere for people to start production in the local area's strengths. As a tradition, every year on the 6th day of the first lunar month, fishermen set out to the river and sea to work...

Ensuring safety and security at the festival.

In early spring, historical sites, scenic spots, and spiritual tourism destinations in the province attract a large number of visitors for sightseeing, festivals, and temple ceremonies. To ensure the safety and security of these festivals, the province's functional forces have proactively conducted inspections and supervision to ensure safety and prevent any incidents of public disorder, fire prevention and control, or violations in business and services.

During the early days of spring, temples and pagodas throughout the province welcome an average of thousands of people and tourists from both within and outside the province who come to worship and sightsee. Provincial authorities, such as security and market management agencies, proactively monitor their areas, intensify inspections and supervision, and address feedback and complaints from the public and tourists.

The police force of Uong Bi City ensured security and order on the first day of the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Snake at the Yen Tu historical and scenic site.

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Viet Ha (Dong Xa Commune Police, Van Don District) stated: The commune police are assigned to ensure safety and security at the Cap Tien Temple area. To ensure the safety of people visiting during the Lunar New Year, a task force comprising representatives from the district police, commune police, and local security forces is responsible for traffic control and safe parking arrangements, ensuring public order and security. During the Tet holiday and the beginning of the new year, the number of visitors to the temple is very large; however, public order and security are always ensured, with no incidents of disorder, theft, or disturbance, guaranteeing the needs of people visiting the temple at the beginning of the new year.

According to Mr. Nguyen Duy Thanh, Deputy Head of the Management Board of the Cua Ong - Cap Tien National Special Historical Relic Site, the Management Board has developed a detailed plan and coordinated with relevant units and functional forces in the area to implement measures to ensure safety and civility during the New Year's festival for the people. Particular attention is paid to issues of security and order, fire prevention and control, and traffic management, creating a safe and peaceful atmosphere for people coming to worship.

In addition, the Provincial Police Department has directed its operational units to strengthen command and control, with officers and soldiers directly inspecting and supervising the implementation of the intensified crime crackdown, ensuring security, order, and traffic safety during the Lunar New Year and spring festivals. Local police forces throughout the province maintain strict 24/7 patrol and control, handling violations of traffic safety regulations, and ensuring security and safety for the people and tourists, especially at religious sites, spring festivals, and areas with large crowds.

Local police forces, in coordination with the management boards of historical sites, have done a good job of disseminating information about ensuring security, traffic safety, and civilized conduct during temple visits. Simultaneously, they have intensified inspections of electrical wiring systems, the arrangement and maintenance of fire extinguishers, and the designated areas for burning votive paper, reminding establishments to proactively implement preventative measures. Fire extinguishers are placed in easily visible locations, especially near areas where incense is burned. Areas for burning votive paper are clearly marked and kept away from worship areas. The management boards of historical sites continuously broadcast announcements via loudspeakers within the sites and have also posted regulations to remind people and tourists not to burn incense or candles in any worship areas. People visiting temples and pagodas during the spring festival generally comply with the temple's regulations, strictly adhering to the designated areas for burning incense and votive paper, thus fostering civilized behavior during spring temple visits.

Lieutenant Colonel Hoang Manh Hung, Deputy Head of the Quang Yen Town Police, said: "Even before Tet (Lunar New Year), the town's police force had arranged a thorough cleaning of all fire prevention and fighting equipment and deployed sufficient personnel and vehicles. At the same time, we organized a 24/7 duty roster to ensure that personnel and equipment were ready to promptly handle any fire incidents or accidents occurring in the area, ensuring that people could enjoy a safe and peaceful Tet holiday."

Ms. Hoang Thanh Huyen (Cua Ong Ward, Cam Pha City) shared: "I went to many places in the province to offer prayers at the beginning of the spring festival. In general, in recent years, people and tourists visiting places of worship and historical sites have shown high awareness and responsibility in environmental protection, fire prevention, and orderly traffic. Many groups only sent one representative to perform the ceremony and offer incense..."

Visiting temples at the beginning of the spring season is not only a spiritual journey, but also a way for each person to enrich their spiritual life, creating motivation for a meaningful and peaceful new year. At spiritual tourist destinations in the province during the first days of the Lunar New Year of the Snake 2025, there was basically no crowding or pushing; littering, disorderly selling, or touting of tourists... were well controlled, creating a comfortable and safe atmosphere for people and tourists when visiting temples at the beginning of the year.

Forecasts indicate that from now until the end of January, historical sites throughout the province will attract large numbers of locals and tourists daily, especially during the spring festivals. Maintaining security and order, ensuring safe and healthy festivals, is crucial in promoting the cultural beauty of Quang Ninh to a wide range of domestic and international visitors.
