Early season linh fish is always favored by diners and has a very high price.
In recent days, the flood season from the upper Mekong River has flooded the fields in the border communes of An Giang province such as Nhon Hoi, Phu Huu, Vinh Xuong. The water not only deposits alluvium but also brings abundant freshwater shrimp and fish to the fields, of which the most anticipated specialty is linh fish.
The first batches of young linh fish of the season were harvested by the people.
According to the natural cycle, around July every year, the flood water flows back to An Giang and gradually recedes into the river around November. The flood season is also the season of young linh fish, a famous specialty only available in the two provinces of An Giang and Dong Thap, which is most awaited. When the flood water flows into the fields, it is also the time when fishermen are busy setting traps and spreading nets to harvest the first batches of young linh fish of the season, the size of which is only as small as the tip of a chopstick.
Early season linh fish are as small as the tip of a chopstick.
Compared to adult linh fish, young linh fish are much more popular with diners thanks to their sweet, fatty meat and soft bones. In particular, linh fish can be processed into many attractive dishes such as linh fish hotpot with water mimosa, linh fish braised with sugarcane, crispy fried linh fish...
Because it is the beginning of the season, the output is not much, so more than a week ago, the price of young linh fish fluctuated at a quite high level, from 250,000 to 300,000 VND/kg. Currently, when linh fish are coming in more, the price has started to cool down, this creates conditions for many consumers to easily access and enjoy.
Linh fish season also creates jobs for many women and children in this area.
The linh fish fishing season, which lasts from July to the end of November, is not only the main income season for fishing households but also creates seasonal jobs for many rural workers. At purchasing warehouses, manual fish processing such as gutting and cleaning fish before delivering them to traders has helped many people have a stable income.
Every linh fish season, fish farms become bustling again.
In Nhon Hoi commune, from 5am to 4pm every day, many women and children gather at the purchasing points to wait for work. Ms. Nguyen Thi Oanh, residing in Nhon Hoi commune (An Giang province) shared: "For more than 10 years now, every flood season, I go to work on young linh fish. Although the work is meticulous, it also helps me earn from 100,000 to 200,000 VND per day, this amount of money is enough for me to support my family."
Young linh fish is a specialty of the early flood season, bringing income to local people.
After being cleaned, the young linh fish are packed in plastic bags by the warehouse owners, carefully iced to keep their freshness and transported to many provinces and big cities such as Can Tho, Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai... bringing the typical flavor of An Giang's flood season to diners everywhere.
