Samsung Vietnam: Pioneering green transformation, accompanying the Government on the journey of sustainable development

(Chinhphu.vn) - In the context of Vietnam's determination to achieve sustainable development goals, green transformation has become a guiding principle in the Government's socio-economic development strategy. As one of the pioneering enterprises, Samsung Vietnam is striving to affirm its leading role in promoting a green, sustainable economy, contributing to bringing Vietnam closer to the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Realizing the Government's call

The Vietnamese Government has identified green transformation as an important pillar to ensure sustainable development, both meeting the needs of economic growth, protecting the environment and responding to climate change. At COP26, Vietnam committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, and issued a series of supporting policies, such as the National Strategy for Green Growth for the 2021-2030 period, Decision 1658/QD-TTg on renewable energy development, and Resolution 24-NQ/TW on environmental protection. These orientations emphasize the transition from a traditional economic model to a circular economy, prioritizing the use of clean energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting green technology.

Following the Government's direction, many large corporations are actively implementing green transformation to respond to climate change and develop a low-carbon economy, aiming for the Net Zero goal, typically Samsung Vietnam.

At the end of April, this enterprise has consecutively started two rooftop solar power projects deployed at the Samsung Electronics Vietnam (SEV) mobile phone manufacturing factory in Bac Ninh and the Samsung Electronics HCMC CE Complex (SEHC) home appliance manufacturing factory in Ho Chi Minh City. The rooftop solar power project at SEV has a capacity of 2.38 MWp, expected to produce clean electricity equivalent to 2.59 million kWh per year and help reduce emissions of about 2,460 tons of CO₂.

The rooftop solar project at SEHC is designed with a capacity of nearly 28 MWp, one of the largest rooftop solar projects in Vietnam, demonstrating Samsung’s commitment to energy transformation. The project generates more than 40,000 megawatt-hours of electricity per year, reducing emissions by more than 26,000 tons of CO₂. These projects are expected to create a ripple effect, encouraging other businesses in Vietnam to invest in renewable energy, thereby supporting the Government in achieving its clean energy and emission reduction goals.

Mr. Na Ki Hong, General Director of Samsung Vietnam shared: "As a global enterprise, Samsung is deeply aware of its responsibility towards the environment and the community where it operates. The two solar power projects at SEV and SEHC are the first steps in Samsung's greening and sustainable development strategy in Vietnam, contributing to environmental protection, reducing greenhouse gas emissions as well as creating a greener future for the next generation."

"Not stopping there, Samsung Vietnam also aims to be carbon neutral by 2027, 3 years earlier than Samsung Group's global commitment under the RE100 initiative," added Mr. Na Ki Hong.

In addition to the solar energy projects that are being actively implemented, Samsung Vietnam is also implementing many other initiatives, in line with the Government's orientations on green economy and sustainable development.

In production and business activities, Samsung factories in Vietnam always consider environmental safety as the number 1 principle in production and business, and constantly seek and apply innovative strategies and ideas on environmental safety.

Every year, Samsung organizes the Environmental Safety Congress to create opportunities for Samsung factories in Vietnam and global Samsung factories, and Tier 1 suppliers for Samsung Vietnam to share about typical examples of environmental safety innovation as well as the ability to apply strategies and ideas into practice.

Samsung also strives to protect water resources through many activities in response to World Water Day such as: Cleaning key water-related areas located next to Samsung factories and localities; donating water purifiers and trash bins; organizing training on water conservation and providing clean water to thousands of students; implementing water resource restoration projects in many localities in Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Kien Giang, etc.

In addition, Samsung also actively implements community activities to raise awareness of environmental protection and educate the younger generation about sustainable development. For example, the Samsung Solve for contest is held annually to encourage students to apply STEM education knowledge to solve local and social problems. In 2025, the topics of this contest will focus on sustainable development...

At the signing ceremony of the funding agreement for the water restoration project in Phat Tich commune, Tien Du district, Bac Ninh province, Mr. Ngo Tan Phuong - Vice Chairman of Bac Ninh Provincial People's Committee acknowledged and highly appreciated Samsung's activities in cleaning, sanitation and environmental protection as well as implementing corporate social responsibility activities with the local government and people in Bac Ninh province during the time the factory has been operating here since 2008.

Recognizing and thanking Samsung for its contributions and special attention to the socio-economic life of Kien Giang province, at the signing ceremony of the agreement to sponsor 1,500 water tanks for the water restoration project in 11 communes of An Minh district, Kien Giang province, Ms. Bui Thuy Hao - Vice President of the Kien Giang Provincial Red Cross Society, shared: "This project has met the needs of the people, timely support for long-term clean water storage tanks, this is a very practical and meaningful project that Samsung brings to the poor people of Kien Giang province".

Through practical actions, Samsung Vietnam is striving to accompany Vietnam on its green transformation journey. The solar energy projects at SEV and SEHC are the first bricks, paving the way for a green economy, where technology and the environment develop in harmony. Samsung is creating a ripple effect, encouraging other businesses in Vietnam to invest in renewable energy, thereby supporting the Government in achieving its clean energy and emission reduction goals.
