Rice production aims for green solutions and carbon emission reduction

On the morning of January 11, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) coordinated with Net Zero Carbon Joint Stock Company to organize a seminar on "Green rice solutions and emission reduction" to share information on sustainable rice farming solutions that achieve carbon certification.

Dak Lak currently has more than 100 thousand hectares of rice, accounting for about 34.98% of the province's annual crop cultivation area. Dak Lak's rice production ranks first in the South Central Coast and Central Highlands regions; the province's average yield reaches nearly 70 quintals/ha, and in 2023 the output is estimated to reach about 800,000 tons/year. The rice area is widely distributed in all localities and has formed commercial rice production areas, meeting domestic consumption and export needs.

However, to meet current green consumption, the agricultural sector in localities must change its approach, moving towards green agriculture, rice production to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has also developed a project for sustainable production of high-quality specialized rice, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, so localities growing rice, especially high-quality rice, will have to apply more sustainable farming processes, using input materials in the direction of reducing chemical fertilizers, pesticides, etc.

At the seminar, delegates listened to businesses in the field of emission reduction measurement and agricultural enterprises introduce: A complete solution for green rice cultivation process to reduce emissions and increase productivity; Experimental process combining the alternating wet and dry rice cultivation method (AWD) and BSB Nano-composite for rice production in Thailand; AWD rice cultivation process to evaluate and measure carbon emission reduction in the Mekong Delta... Thereby, sharing experiences in low greenhouse gas emission rice cultivation with cooperatives, farmers and professional agencies, agricultural management agencies of the province. At the same time, connecting cooperatives and farmers to participate in the rice production model to reduce emissions and achieve carbon certification.

Speaking at the seminar, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Hoai Duong said that agriculture is considered a sector that causes a lot of emissions, so a sharp reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture associated with the upcoming recognition of carbon certificates will also become the direction that Dak Lak agriculture wishes to achieve to create better quality output products, create environmentally friendly agricultural product brands, create stable income for farmers and prepare to participate in the carbon credit market once this market is operational in 2028.

Through the opinions of the delegates, the locality will find a suitable group of solutions to promote the sustainable development of the province's agricultural sector, ensuring food security and foodstuffs associated with protecting the ecological environment.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will continue to coordinate with Net Zero Carbon Joint Stock Company to develop a specific program framework for implementing greenhouse gas emission reduction in rice production in Dak Lak.
