Right from the early years of the resistance war against French colonialism and American imperialism, thousands of outstanding young men of Cao Bang did not hesitate to endure hardships and volunteered to join the Youth Volunteer Force, carrying out the tasks of transporting food and weapons, clearing roads, carrying the wounded, and serving in combat on fierce battlefields. Roads such as National Highway 4, the Vietnam-China border, and the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail all bear the footprints of the Cao Bang Youth Volunteer Force.
Along with the Youth Volunteer Force nationwide, the provincial Youth Volunteer Force against the French was established on October 3, 1951, with 75 members, mainly youth union members of various ethnic groups, led by comrade Pham The Tran, Secretary of the Hoa An District Youth Union. Then the Provincial Administrative Committee decided to establish the Youth Volunteer Force, consisting of 3 companies, with the codes C201, C202, C203, with over 500 members managed by the Provincial Youth Union and the Department of Transport, with the task of repairing roads, clearing unexploded bombs, repairing bridges and culverts... on key routes. Through the periods of resistance, the provincial Youth Volunteer Force has upheld revolutionary heroism, promoting the Youth Volunteer Force tradition. Always believing in the leadership of the Party, Uncle Ho, in the victory of the resistance war, the peak of which was the Dien Bien Phu Campaign and the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign.
Many of them have heroically sacrificed or suffered lifelong disabilities. Although the war has long since ended, the memories of a time of youth dedication and living for ideals are still preserved and passed on to future generations as a symbol of patriotism and the tireless spirit of volunteering. Having joined the Youth Volunteer Force, dedicating her youth to the independence and freedom of the nation, going through the resistance war against the US to save the country, Ms. Than Thi Xuan, Truong Ha commune was lucky to survive and return home but with disabilities and declining health. In the past, Ms. Xuan has promptly enjoyed the regimes and policies of the Party, State, local Party committees and authorities, which is a great source of encouragement for Ms. Xuan and her family. Promoting the glorious tradition of the Youth Volunteer Force, Ms. Xuan actively participates in local social work, encourages her children and grandchildren to comply with the Party's policies and the State's laws, and strives to study and work to contribute to her homeland and country.
The war has ended, many former Youth Volunteers have returned to their localities, changed careers, continued to study, work and contribute in many fields. Although life is still full of hardships, former Youth Volunteers still maintain the qualities of soldiers in the past, set good examples in implementing the Party's guidelines, policies and laws of the State, actively participate in patriotic emulation movements and social work at the grassroots level. Many people, despite their old age, still hold the positions of head of residential groups, members of the Front's working committee, grassroots mediators, etc., actively participating in building new rural areas, maintaining security and order, contributing to building cultural life in residential areas. The Provincial Association of Former Youth Volunteers has launched many exciting emulation movements such as: "Former Youth Volunteers set good examples", "Help each other do business , eliminate hunger and reduce poverty", "Build clean and strong branches"... Thereby, many members, despite their old age, are still actively developing the family economy and participating in social work. Some typical economic models such as growing fruit trees, raising livestock, and doing community tourism in the communes of Trung Khanh, Bao Lac, and Hoa An... bring stable income, creating jobs for children in the family and many local workers.
Currently, the province has over 1,200 former Youth Volunteers, of which 677 members are active at all levels of the Association. The Association of Former Youth Volunteers at all levels is truly a warm home and spiritual support for its members. The Association mobilizes and connects many companion units, expresses gratitude for comradeship, and helps many members in difficult circumstances to rise up in life... In the period of 2019 - 2024, the Association has declared and made records for 520 members to receive subsidies according to regulations. Of which, monthly subsidies for 17 people; one-time subsidies for 292 people; and funeral subsidies for 211 people. 365 gifts worth 180 million VND were presented, 136 gifts in kind worth 103 million VND were presented. In the first 6 months of 2025, the Association organized visits and presented 82 gifts to families of former Youth Volunteers in difficult circumstances, lonely female former Youth Volunteers with no place to rely on, and former Youth Volunteers who are war invalids with a total amount of over 44 million VND... The "mutual love and support" activities have created a positive effect in the community and spread a profound humanitarian spirit...
Chairman of the Provincial Association of Former Youth Volunteers Ma Thi Xuan said: The Association at all levels continues to promote in-depth campaigns, focusing on the movement "Former Youth Volunteers set a good example in studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and lifestyle", the emulation "Former Youth Volunteers do many good deeds, for the sake of comradeship"... Strengthen propaganda and education on revolutionary traditions, instill patriotism and noble ideals in the younger generation; coordinate with departments, branches, unions and socio-political organizations to effectively implement gratitude activities, care for the material and spiritual lives of members...
Ready to go anywhere, do anything when the Fatherland needs, the Youth Volunteers who once fought in the midst of bullets and bullets continue to write heroic history on the battlefields in peacetime. Their contributions and efforts are the motivation for today's young generation to continue the heroic tradition of the Vietnam Youth Volunteers.
