Duy Tan University architecture students connect and create with the exhibition 'Tropiceering Vietnam'

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên30/01/2024

The exhibition introduces some architectural research and designs of many professors, architects, and students at the University of Hawaii, with a special highlight being the projects with design models of students majoring in Architecture at Duy Tan University. The architectural projects of Duy Tan students are accompanied and guided by Dr. Tran Gia Viet My, lecturer at the University of Hawaii, USA.

Spreading modern architectural design "tropiceering" in the tropics

After many years of research, Professor and Architect David Rockwood of the University of Hawaii chose the phrase "tropiceering" to talk about modern architectural designs that are suitable for the vibrant pace of life, climate, culture and art in the tropics. After working with Professor and Architect Bundit Kanisthakhon, an exhibition on tropiceering was organized by the two professors at the Haigo and Irene Shen Gallery of Architecture at the University of Hawaii in 2021 and received many positive reviews from the local and international architectural community.

From here, the "tropiceering" architectural design spirit has spread widely to Thailand and Vietnam, and is receiving special attention from countries with the same tropical climate such as Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia... The purpose of architectural design in the spirit of "tropiceering" is to provide design solutions suitable for tropical climates, helping to create the most favorable living and working environment for local people.

"Tropiceering Vietnam" held at Duy Tan University created an exciting atmosphere in the exhibition space with a variety of models, drawings and unique architectural projects designed to suit the terrain, climate and environment of Da Nang City in particular and the tropical region in general. A 1:1 scale design and construction model by a second-year student of Architecture at Duy Tan University created a highlight at the exhibition and was highly appreciated by guests as well as professors from the University of Hawaii.

All projects displayed at the exhibition must both ensure the requirements of the subject and meet the criteria set by Professor and Architect Bundit Kanisthakhon - the person directly in charge of the quality of the "Tropiceering" standard, including:

  • How to deploy materials, structures, architectural styles, etc.
  • Handling space and architectural functions to suit the local climate
  • Creative in the way of connecting and distributing space…

Speaking at the exhibition, Professor and Architect Bundit said: "Architectural Design and Construction are very challenging subjects and very few schools in the world can optimally implement them in the training process. Therefore, the designs that Duy Tan students create are truly wonderful products. I highly commend that, and you should be proud of what you have created."

Dr. Tran Gia Viet My - Lecturer at University of Hawaii commented on the projects of DTU Architecture students

Hoang Van Tan Dat, one of the students who designed and built the 1:1 scale project under the guidance of Dr. Tran Gia Viet My, shared: "During the project, we had to ensure design criteria such as avoiding material waste, or managing time and costs effectively. One lesson we learned to help limit material waste is to limit the number of times the size of the material is changed during the design process. If the design does not match the standard size of the material, cutting and changing the size will take a lot of time during the construction process. This not only wastes materials but also increases the cost of implementation. In a broader sense, these criteria are consistent with the concept of Sustainable Architecture, which is very popular in developed countries."

In order to present and display their designs at the "Tropiceering Vietnam" Exhibition, Architecture students at Duy Tan University studied and worked under the direct guidance of Dr. Tran Gia Viet My, a lecturer at the University of Hawaii, and his colleagues. Dr. Viet My continuously supports teaching the Basic Project 2 and Advanced Design Project courses for Architecture students at the university. Dr. Viet My is currently the co-owner of Studio Ki'owao - a design and construction company in Honolulu, Hawaii. He also founded My Tran Studio, focusing on researching and designing houses using new materials for low-income people.

Depending on the requirements of the subjects, Dr. Viet My offers specific topics:

  • Core Project 2 - Design/Build Studio (for 2nd year students): requires students to design and build a model of a public building at a 1:1 scale.
  • Advanced Design Project - Floating Architecture (for 3rd year students): focuses on researching social issues and providing appropriate architectural solutions, specifically in this semester, studying to design floating architectures for coastal cities affected by global climate change; then, proposing a floating village design suitable for the culture, climate, and terrain in Central Vietnam.

After completing this course, all students presented their design ideas to lecturers from Duy Tan University and representatives from the University of Hawaii. As a result, some of the second-year students' designs were also selected to be part of the "Tropiceering Vietnam" Exhibition.

Trieu Thi Ha Phuong - student of Class K27CSUKTR shared: "Doing the projects on 'Floating Village' architecture is really interesting for me. Because the designs based on floating architecture are very unique, not the common architecture often seen in daily life. The amount of work we had to do was much more than other projects: from researching and synthesizing information about many floating works, selecting, classifying, design thinking, ... to choosing how to present, present slides, make diagrams to suit the international style and can be applied to participate in architectural competitions both domestically and internationally in the future".

Dr. Tran Gia Viet My said: "During the process of teaching and guiding students to carry out projects for this exhibition, I found that Duy Tan students are very hard-working and have quite sharp thinking. They grasp problems quite quickly and know how to effectively apply the knowledge and skills they have learned into practice. In my opinion, they need to update new knowledge, approach modern works in the world to grasp the latest and most popular design trends. This will greatly support them in their studies as well as their future careers."

With cooperation and connections with experts, universities and businesses in the field of Architecture at home and abroad, Duy Tan University is providing Architecture students with the opportunity to absorb and grasp the latest design trends in the world, thereby confidently creating many special and meaningful architectures aimed at serving the social community.
