Number of students hospitalized after eating school meals continues to increase

On September 25, Kien Hai District Medical Center ( Kien Giang ) announced that the number of students of Kien Hai Secondary and High School hospitalized for suspected food poisoning has increased to 25 students.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Can - Deputy Director in charge of Kien Hai District Medical Center - of these 25 students, 8 students were transferred to the provincial hospital for treatment, 17 students are hospitalized at the center. Currently, the health condition of the students is stable.

Through initial verification, the menu for students having breakfast on September 23 at the school cafeteria included sweet and sour chicken rice, rice with ribs, vermicelli with crab soup, fish cake bread...

As Dan Tri reported, earlier, on the afternoon of September 23, a number of students of Kien Hai Secondary and High School had symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fever, etc. They were taken to the hospital by the school's Board of Directors and teachers.

Ms. X. (parent of 1 of 4 students being treated at Kien Giang Province Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital) recounted that at the time of hospitalization, her child had many symptoms of vomiting, fever, abdominal pain,...

"My grandchild came home complaining of nausea, then vomited continuously. The family was so heartbroken that they took him to the hospital, where the doctors diagnosed him with food poisoning. When I got to the hospital, I saw students lying around, and I was scared," said Ms. X.

According to Mrs. X., normally if she eats unsanitary food, her grandchild will only have diarrhea, not become more serious and vomit a lot like this.

"I hope the authorities will clarify the cause to know if they bought spoiled food and cooked it to sell to students," Ms. X emphasized.

The Medical Inspection Team of Kien Hai district has taken food samples from the school canteen to send to the province for testing to clarify the cause of the poisoning.
