On September 11th, the Vietnam Association for the Protection of Nature and Environment, in coordination with the People's Committees of My Chanh Hoa and An Hiep communes in Vinh Long province, held a ceremony to receive the certificate recognizing five ancient trees as Vietnamese Heritage Trees. These included three fig trees (Ficus microcarpa) located at Hai Van Farm - Vam Ho Bird Sanctuary (My Chanh Hoa commune) and two banyan trees (at Ba Temple in Giong Sao hamlet and Ba Temple in Giong Trom hamlet, An Hiep commune).
At the ceremony, Mr. Le Chi Linh, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Association for Nature and Environment Protection, stated that the selection, recognition, and honoring of ancient fig and banyan trees aim to preserve valuable genetic resources in biodiversity conservation, protect typical environmental landscapes, and introduce the richness and diversity of Vietnam's flora to the world; thereby directly promoting and enhancing the value of the historical and cultural relic site, contributing to the socio -economic development of the locality and other eco-tourism areas of Vinh Long province and the Mekong Delta region.
According to Mr. Tran Phuong Binh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of My Chanh Hoa commune, the three banyan trees in the Vam Ho Bird Sanctuary are very old. Based on field surveys, and considering characteristics such as trunk size, secondary roots, number and characteristics of secondary roots, and canopy circumference, one tree is estimated to be over 200 years old, while the other two are approximately over 100 years old.
The three banyan trees recognized as Vietnamese Heritage Trees bring great value to tourism in Vam Ho, specifically to Hai Van Eco-tourism and Education Company Limited (Hai Van Farm - Vam Ho Bird Sanctuary).
This is not only an attractive destination but also a "living museum" of nature and history. Visitors come here not only to admire the majestic beauty of the tree but also to listen to the stories and legends associated with it, creating a meaningful travel experience that promotes the importance of nature conservation and heritage preservation.
According to the People's Committee of An Hiep commune, the two banyan trees in the temple courtyard were planted when the Ba Temple in Giong Sao hamlet and the Ba Temple in Giong Trom hamlet were built. Over more than 100 years, the trees have been closely associated with many generations of local people.
Remarkably, despite enduring two fierce wars and natural disasters, the trees remain lush and provide shade year-round. Honoring these two ancient banyan trees as Vietnamese heritage trees is a recognition of the people and local authorities' efforts in protecting and caring for the trees and preserving the traditions of their homeland.
At the same time, it is important to raise public awareness about environmental protection, a matter of profound significance and urgency, especially in an era where climate change is a global threat.
