The Dmitrii Donskoi was a Russian Imperial Navy battleship that was sunk during the Battle of Tsushima in May 1905. This was the last defeat of the Russian Navy in the war. The ship was so badly damaged that the captain decided to scuttle the Dmitrii Donskoi himself to prevent the Japanese from seizing the 5,500 boxes of gold bars and coins on board. Photo: CNBC. After years of searching, on July 15, 2018, a team of experts from South Korea, the UK and Canada discovered the wreck of the Dmitrii Donskoi. The 5,800-ton ship was located at a depth of more than 420m, about 1.6km from Ulleungdo Island, South Korea. Photo: US Navy. The team used two manned submarines, specially designed for research and exploration , to capture images of the Dmitrii Donskoi. They identified it as the Dmitrii Donskoi because its name was written in Cyrillic on the stern. Photo: EPA.
