Previously, on May 16, Ms. HTY (born in 1955, residing in Ward 3, Soc Trang City) had a high fever, vomiting, and diarrhea, and was taken to a private medical facility for treatment by her family. After 2 days of treatment, patient Y.'s symptoms did not improve.
On May 18, the patient was taken by his family to Soc Trang General Hospital in a state of lethargy, high fever and subcutaneous hemorrhage.
Here, doctors conducted tests and discovered that patient Y. was positive for Streptococcus suis, the agent that causes dangerous streptococcal disease in humans.
The patient’s family said that Ms. Y. is a housewife. A few days before falling ill, Ms. Y. bought pork bones and meat near An Nghiep Industrial Park (Soc Trang province) to cook for her family.
Dr. Dang Minh Hien said that after more than half a month of treatment at the hospital, patient Y.'s condition has now stabilized. However, because the patient is old, his health is still weak, he coughs a lot and has a poor appetite, so the hospital is keeping him for observation. It is expected that if patient Y.'s health improves, he will be discharged this weekend.
According to information from the Soc Trang Province Center for Disease Control, immediately after the results of Ms. Y. being infected with streptococcus suis, the unit coordinated with the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine and the Soc Trang City Medical Center to carry out epidemiological investigation, environmental treatment and food traceability activities.
Currently, Ms. Y's family members have been closely monitored for their health for 14 days and no unusual health developments have been recorded.
