On March 13, Spotify - the world's leading music streaming company announced that it will broadcast music videos (MVs) on this platform in certain markets, officially entering the "land" previously occupied by YouTube.
Spotify's announcement stated that the MVs will be streamed on Spotify from March 13.
Spotify will launch a limited-edition catalog to offer users popular tracks from global artists like Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat and Ice Spice, as well as local favorites.
For now, the music videos will only be available to paid subscribers in the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Kenya. This means that Spotify subscribers in these markets will now be able to watch, not just listen to, the music.
In early February, Spotify announced it had surpassed 600 million monthly users, including 236 million paying subscribers.
YouTube remains the leading music video streaming channel, with many of the most popular content on the platform being music videos. Music videos like “Despacito,” “Shape of You,” and “Gangnam Style” have all racked up billions of views.
Spotify has invested heavily to accelerate its growth, expanding into new markets and most recently moving into exclusive content like Podcasts (a series of digital audio or video files that users can download and listen to)./.
