The "STEAM for Girls - Green STEAM for Girls 2024" competition is organized by the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences (an agency under the Ministry of Education and Training ) in collaboration with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Victoria School Education System. The competition will officially open on September 30 and the awards ceremony will be held on October 3.
Accordingly, "STEAM for Girls" was born with the aim of promoting the participation of female students in the field of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) as well as STEAMeducation for female students in schools.
Efforts to promote gender equality through science competition
"STEAM for Girls" demonstrates a strong commitment from UNICEF and the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences as well as the Victoria School Education system in creating conditions for girls to access learning and career opportunities in STEAM fields.
"STEAM for Girls" is a creative playground, contributing to promoting gender equality in the fields of science and technology.
In fact, STEAM is considered a male-dominated field, with the majority of science, technology and engineering majors. This gender imbalance stems from social stereotypes about women’s roles and abilities in scientific fields, which require logical thinking and high technical skills. This not only makes it difficult for women to access STEAM, but also creates an invisible barrier, reducing motivation and development opportunities for female students.
Therefore, the competition "STEAM for Girls - Green STEAM for female students 2024" was organized to help break down gender stereotypes, bringing an equal and fair playing field for female students. The competition is not only an academic event but also an effort of the units in creating an environment where female students can freely express their abilities without being limited by any barriers.
Prof. Le Anh Vinh - Director of the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences, Head of the Organizing Committee of the contest said: "We always want to create activities, forums, and competitions on scientific research, promote innovation, creativity, and equip knowledge and skills for female students, "STEAM for Girls" is one of them. Students will have the opportunity to maximize their abilities without being limited by gender stereotypes, in the field of STEAM, a field that may have previously been pursued by mostly male students."
Since its announcement, "STEAM for Girls - Green STEAM for Girls 2024" has attracted nearly two hundred female students to participate in the preliminary round and 69 female students were selected for the final round. Students from 13 to 15 years old, representing 18 provinces and cities across the country, interacted and exchanged academic and practical knowledge with candidates from Laos, Thailand and Malaysia.
"STEAM for Girls" opens on September 30 and the awards ceremony is on October 4.
Participating in "STEAM for Girls" also gives girls the opportunity to build a network of connections, learn from the local and international community and receive support from experts. This not only helps develop professional skills but also inspires girls to pursue their future dreams.
In other words, the meaning of "STEAM for Girls" is not only about equipping knowledge and skills in science and engineering fields, but also brings greater value in breaking gender stereotypes and expanding career prospects.
Creating green solutions for a sustainable future with "STEAM for Girls"
In the final round of the first "STEAM for Girls - Green STEAM for Girls 2024", female students will face questions on the topics of STEAM skills, green skills, renewable energy and climate change.
With this group of topics, female students not only have the opportunity to learn and practice basic knowledge of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, but also explore and practice sustainable skills to respond to global environmental challenges.
The content of the competition encourages teams to participate in researching and developing creative projects, thereby applying STEAM knowledge to find solutions to practical environmental problems. In particular, when combining art and science and technology, STEAM helps female students develop the ability to think multidimensionally, both rationally and emotionally, thereby creating breakthrough solutions.
This is of great significance as the world seeks sustainable solutions to global challenges such as climate change, environmental pollution and social inequality.
Along with that, "STEAM for Girls" is also an opportunity for participating teams to learn teamwork, creative problem solving and practice leadership skills. These valuable experiences will equip them with the ability to face global challenges in the future, while inspiring each individual to become a pioneer in building a sustainable world.
"STEAM for Girls" creates opportunities for female students to participate in creating solutions to pressing global issues.
Along with academic activities, the contest also brings female students exciting practical experiences such as: Visiting Vietjet Aviation Academy, visiting facilities and green spaces of Victoria School, practical learning experiences, "city tour" to explore Ho Chi Minh City...
After the "STEAM for Girls - Green STEAM for Girls 2024" competition ends, contestants and guests will continue to participate in the Education Forum on Renewable Energy and Climate Change . This is an important follow-up event, creating opportunities for female students to broaden their horizons and deepen their knowledge of pressing environmental issues.
By empowering girls to access and develop STEAM skills, "STEAM for Girls" breaks down long-standing stereotypes, creating equal opportunities for them to confidently pursue their passions. At the same time, through topics such as renewable energy or climate change, the competition has inspired social responsibility, helping girls contribute to solving urgent global problems, thereby building a more sustainable future.
