Ancient house in world famous movie
Huynh Thuy Le ancient house (225A Nguyen Hue, Ward 1, Sa Dec City, Dong Thap ) was built by merchant Huynh Cam Thuan in Sa Dec in 1895 and restored in 1917. The house has a total area of 258 m², designed with three rooms typical of the South, a unique blend of Vietnamese - Chinese - French architectural styles.
The facade of the house stands out with its decorative flower molds, ceramics, porcelain, and elaborately carved wooden doors. The yin-yang tiled roof, the two gables are curved in the shape of a boat, in the style of a Northern communal house or pagoda. The horizontal lacquered boards, columns and beams are embossed with vivid patterns of birds, animals, plants, and are lacquered and gilded, quite sophisticated and eye-catching...
However, visitors to Huynh Thuy Le ancient house not only see the unique features of the house but also learn about the love story of Mr. Huynh Thuy Le (the youngest son of the homeowner) with French writer Marguerite Duras in a chance meeting on the My Thuan ferry in 1929. The romantic but unsuccessful love story of the two was written by writer Marguerite Duras in the novel The Lover in 1984 and translated into more than 40 languages.
From this novel, French director Jean-Jacques Annaud adapted it into the film L'Amant (The Lover) in 1992. In 2009, Huynh Thuy Le ancient house was ranked as a national relic by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, attracting many domestic and foreign tourists.
