Car purchasing power in Vietnam "cools down", waiting for a new breakthrough

Entering the second quarter of 2025, the Vietnamese auto market showed signs of slowing down after a surge in March.

According to data compiled by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), TC Group (Hyundai distributor) and VinFast , total market sales in April reached 43,643 vehicles, down 11% compared to the previous month (49,218 vehicles).

This decline is believed to come from weakened consumer demand after the peak period at the beginning of the year, along with the fact that car purchase incentive programs from manufacturers are almost gone in April.

In the somewhat gloomy overall picture, the two brands Toyota and Mazda were rare bright spots with remarkable growth. Specifically, Toyota recorded a 4% increase compared to the previous month and an increase of 24% compared to the same period in 2024, reaching 5,566 vehicles sold. Mazda increased even more strongly with 17% compared to March and an increase of 27% compared to the same period, reflecting stable purchasing power in the popular car segment.

Despite recording a decrease compared to the previous month, VinFast continued to affirm its leading position in the market with sales of 9,588 vehicles in April. This success was mainly due to the two mini electric vehicle models VF 3 and VF 5, which are popular with urban consumers thanks to their affordable prices and low operating costs.

Toyota is still the brand with the highest sales among VAMA members, while Hyundai maintains its top 3 position with nearly 4,500 vehicles sold. Following are Ford, Mazda, Honda and Kia, respectively sharing the positions in the leading group in terms of market share.

The total sales of the three brands VinFast, Toyota and Hyundai alone accounted for more than 50% of the entire Vietnamese automobile market in April 2025.

It is forecasted that in May, the market may continue to fluctuate when VinFast launches a nationwide promotion program, reducing the selling price of all car models by 4% from May 22. This is considered a strong move to stimulate demand after the market showed signs of slowing down. Meanwhile, other car manufacturers have not yet announced significant incentive programs, which may cause sales to continue to decrease slightly next month.

Although the decline in April was not too deep, it was a warning signal for car manufacturers about changing consumer trends. Manufacturers need to adjust their marketing strategies, product pricing, and increase after-sales policies to retain buyers in the context of increasingly fierce market competition and consumers increasingly considering carefully before deciding to buy a car.
