The Cho Gao Canal Upgrading Project ( Tien Giang Province) Phase 2 (referred to as the Project) has been completed and put into use, making it easier for people to travel and transport goods. In particular, the Project has also contributed to creating a new look for the Cho Gao Canal bank, meeting the expectations of people for many years.

FINISH ON TIME

According to the Waterway Project Management Board - Ministry of Transport (MOT), the project is invested with the goal of upgrading and stabilizing the Cho Gao canal. At the same time, it is to completely overcome the problem of overloading and congestion of boats, promptly meeting the current and long-term water transport needs on the route. With these goals, in recent times, the investor has actively coordinated with local authorities to focus on accelerating the progress of the project.

Mr. Hoang Ha Nam, Project Director, said that the first phase of the project invested in a stone embankment structure. When put into use, waste was stuck on the embankment, trees grew, as well as people's boats and ships moored, leading to damage. From this situation, the Ministry of Transport approved the adjustment of the investment project with a more solid structure.

The advantages of the Project are the solid embankment structure, longer usage time and ensuring aesthetics as well as environmental protection. During the implementation process, the Project encountered many difficulties, especially in site clearance.

However, with the efforts of the Waterway Project Management Board, the consulting and supervising units, the construction contractor has actively coordinated with the locality to resolve the problem. Up to now, the project has been completed on schedule, with great aesthetics and consensus from the people.

Taking advantage of the surplus capital of the Project, the Ministry of Transport has invested in an additional 316.2 m long embankment project, protecting the shore combined with an emergency ship mooring post on the North bank (section belonging to Cho Gao town) with a value of 34.98 billion VND. This project is invested to serve the urban beautification of Cho Gao district. At the same time, it serves ships and boats for emergency mooring in case of an incident.

“The project is being implemented and constructed to meet the quality requirements of the design, technical instructions and current technical standards and regulations. This is a vital route connecting the Mekong Delta with Ho Chi Minh City, so in addition to the expectation of socio-economic development of the Western provinces, serving social security for local people is what we are most proud of,” added Mr. Hoang Nam Ha.

NEW LOOK

In fact, for many years, households living along the southern bank of Cho Gao Canal (in Binh Phan and Binh Phuc Nhut communes of Cho Gao District) have always been in a state of anxiety due to the serious erosion situation. This has greatly affected the lives, activities and travel of the people. However, now, that is only a thing of the past, because Cho Gao Canal has now turned a new page.

Cho Gao Canal has been upgraded and expanded to facilitate the movement of water transport vehicles.
Cho Gao Canal has been upgraded and expanded to facilitate the movement of water transport vehicles.

Returning to the Nam Kinh Cho Gao bank in the first days of the new year, we were surprised by the changes of this canal. The embankment combined with the traffic road was built neatly and straight, creating a new look for the canal bank. Along with that, people also started to build spacious houses when their dream of settling down became a reality. Under the canal, boats and ships came and went busily and conveniently when the canal was widened and the silted areas were dredged.

Living in Cho Gao canal, for many years, Mr. Vo Van Danh's family (Binh Phan commune) has always been worried about landslides. The landslides have encroached on his family's land by about 4 - 5 meters. Therefore, when the State invested in the embankment, he and the local people were very happy. "Now, the embankment and traffic road have been completed, so the people are very happy. My family no longer has to worry about landslides" - Mr. Danh shared.

The project has a total investment of more than 1,335 billion VND. The project dredging and expanding the waterway of the Nam Kinh Cho Gao riverbank, with a total length of about 9.85 km; construction of the protection works for the Nam Kinh Cho Gao riverbank, bridges and residential roads... After renovation, the waterway section meets the standards of a level II waterway, with a depth of more than 3.5 m and a width of more than 50 m, helping ships and boats to move more smoothly.

Sharing the joy with many households living along the Nam Kinh Cho Gao embankment, Mr. Pham Thanh Cuong (Binh Khuong 2 hamlet, Binh Phuc Nhut commune) said that before the embankment was invested, his family and local people had difficulty traveling and their lives were unstable. Many households had to relocate because landslides continuously ate into their houses and gardens.

“Now, with the investment in embankments combined with roads, people are very excited. Because traveling is very convenient, there are no more landslides, so people can do business in peace. People no longer worry about high tides causing flooding in the last months of the year like before,” Mr. Cuong added.

According to Mr. Pham Van Teo, a resident of Binh Khuong 2 Hamlet, Binh Phuc Nhut Commune, the implementation of the Project is very meaningful to his family as well as other households here, because people have been waiting for more than ten years, now it has become a reality, so they are very happy.

“People’s travel is now very convenient, they no longer have to endure the “dusty sun, muddy rain”. People no longer have to lose land due to landslides, stabilizing their lives and production, creating conditions for economic development. In addition, the invested embankment also creates a clean and beautiful landscape, with a place to exercise, so everyone is very excited” - Mr. Teo happily said.
