In this reprint, the book "The person who captured the rice mill" has an appendix, which is the story of former prisoners of Con Dao about Uncle Ton (President Ton Duc Thang) and some typical milestones in his life and career.
The book “The Man Who Built the Rice Mill” was written by writer Nguyen Cong Hoan in 1959 and revised in 1976. The illustration by artist Mai Long for this work was first published in 1978.
With this reprint, Kim Dong Publishing House hopes that readers, especially young readers, will understand more about a special period in Uncle Ton's revolutionary life, the period of struggle in Con Dao prison (1930 - 1945).
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the French colonialists turned Con Dao prison into a “hell on earth” in order to suppress Vietnamese patriots. However, this place became a “Communist School” - a place to train the qualities and will of many generations of revolutionary soldiers.
In the dark rice milling cellar of Con Dao prison, there was a communist soldier who did not succumb to the torture of the French prison guards. Although he was assigned to be a “cap rang” (a prisoner managing other prisoners) - a dangerous position that was no different from “going to death” because “they were hated by their brothers”, but in that situation, the cap rang with his kindness influenced other prisoners.
That person was comrade Ton Duc Thang. He was a shining example of sacrifice and love for those in similar situations. Although the enemy used many tricks to persecute him, the communist soldier Ton Duc Thang still bravely faced and skillfully overcame them. When facing thugs and scoundrels, Uncle Ton persistently tried to influence and enlighten them.
The author also successfully portrayed the image of Uncle Ton as a kind man, always defending the weak, bravely fighting against injustice, and punishing the wicked.
With the sharp realistic writing style, the captivating storytelling style of writer Nguyen Cong Hoan, and the vivid and emotional illustrations of artist Mai Long, in just a short amount of time, "The man who opened the rice mill" will help readers visualize more clearly the portrait of the indomitable and kind-hearted communist soldier.
