Meta Group confirmed on August 21 that it has paused hiring for its new artificial intelligence (AI) division, ending a series of heavy spending aimed at attracting top researchers and engineers in the field.

The decision, effective last week, comes amid a major restructuring of the group.

The move is a fundamental organizational reorganization aimed at building a solid foundation for hyperintelligence efforts, tied to annual planning and budgeting processes, a Meta spokesperson said.

Meta recently restructured its AI operations into four areas: machine intelligence development, AI products, AI infrastructure, and long-term projects. This arrangement clearly reflects CEO Mark Zuckerberg's ambition to create AI systems that can outperform humans.

Meta has spent heavily on AI this year, including poaching talent from rivals with signing bonuses that could reach $100 million.

The most notable deal was the purchase of a 49% stake in Scale AI for $14.3 billion, bringing founder Alexandr Wang to lead the AI lab and develop the Llama line of open-source models.

The hiring freeze comes amid growing debate in the tech and investment world about the risk of AI becoming a “bubble.” Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives said tech stocks remain undervalued in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Daniel Newman, CEO of Futurum Group, said that this move is a natural stop for Meta to reorganize its staff and utilize existing resources before investing more in new AI projects./.
