According to the world's number 1 3-cushion Carom Billiards player Dick Jaspers, the most impressive Vietnamese player to him is not the number 1 Vietnamese player Tran Quyet Chien or any other talent. It is the young player Bao Phuong Vinh - who defeated him at the World Cup Las Vega in early March.
World No. 1 Billiards Player Dick Jaspers
Along with some "old men" such as Blomdahl, Marco Zanetti, Eddy Merckx..., Dutch player Dick Jaspers is considered a legend of the world's 3-cushion Billiards Carom village. Especially for Dick Jaspers, he has been the world's number 1 player for many years. Before "opening the game" at the 3-cushion Billiards Carom World Cup in Ho Chi Minh City in 2023 this afternoon, we had some discussions with him about some related issues.
* Reporter: Hello, congratulations on your return to Vietnam. Can you tell us how you feel about your return?
Dick Jaspers: After a week of vacation with my family, this is a trip to Vietnam that I find very meaningful to me. This is a country that I have been to many times and each time I have been warmly welcomed. In particular, the fans always love me on the field and off the field. The Ho Chi Minh City World Cup is the second tournament in the UMB World Cup system this year. In the first tournament, I also played quite successfully. Coming to this tournament, I hope to compete well, going further than what I expected.
* What is your impression of Vietnam and its people?
- I am very impressed with the Vietnamese people, you are very cute, friendly and hospitable. All the athletes coming to Ho Chi Minh City, we are all warmly welcomed whether it is the first time or many times. Regarding Vietnamese cuisine , I have heard that there are many delicious dishes. However, because I am a professional player, I need to maintain my health for the tournaments, so I only eat according to a separate menu. I do not dare to take risks, avoid eating all strange dishes that are not safe for me. During the times I came to Vietnam to compete, I also visited some tourist attractions in Ho Chi Minh City. I went to the War Remnants Museum and was very impressed with it. I am impressed with what the Vietnamese people have done in the process of building and defending the country.
* How do you rate the level of Vietnamese players?
- With Vietnamese players, I think you have a very high fighting spirit. Every time they compete, they open their eyes wide to look at the ball and the position of the ball. I feel that they concentrate very highly every minute, every second to fight for each point. In particular, I am impressed with young player Bao Phuong Vinh - who defeated me in the recent US tournament. Although he is a young player, having just joined the international arena in a short time, Bao Phuong Vinh has shown his courage and high fighting spirit. Every time he looks at the ball, he opens his eyes wide with a desire to win. If well invested, I think Bao Phuong Vinh will be a player with a high level of expertise in the world.
Bao Phuong Vinh is a Vietnamese player highly appreciated by Dick Jaspers.
* In your opinion, what is the biggest weakness of Vietnamese players? What advice can you give to help Vietnamese Billiards develop?
- I think the biggest weakness of Vietnamese players is that they rarely compete internationally. Although I think that Vietnamese players are very good and capable of competing in international arenas. They are willing to learn and research online and on the internet to gradually improve themselves. I know that in Vietnam, you have many tournaments organized by clubs, seemingly throughout the year. Although you compete regularly, those are still domestic tournaments. The international arena is the real playground for Vietnamese players to practice and develop.
Thank you for sharing and I wish you success in this year's tournament.
