"Don't generalize. Whenever you hear loud honking, blame the drivers for the accident. Of course, if you drive every day, the risk is higher, but people on the road, especially motorbikes, who cut in front of trucks and public vehicles, are forced to honk their horns," said container truck driver Truong Son (living in Ho Chi Minh City).

Pedestrians always fill in empty spaces, so they have to honk their horns.

After his second year of university, Truong Son dropped out of school and became a truck assistant on the North-South route, then became a container truck driver from then until now. Because of that, he has experienced almost every situation and story on his journey of thousands of miles.

Regarding honking while driving in the inner city, on highways that intersect many districts in Ho Chi Minh City, Son said he still does it often. However, it is not done indiscriminately, there is a reason.

First of all, motorcyclists love to “fill” in the gaps. The danger is that most of those gaps are located at the rear, sides and front of large vehicles, from sleeper buses, trucks, to container trucks. These are also blind spots, spots that are difficult for drivers to see.

Many car drivers also drive in a "fill-in-the-blank" manner, while braking and dodging for heavily loaded vehicles is not a simple matter.

"Try sitting in the cabin of a container truck and see. Motorbikes rush by, cutting in front of you every second, it happens to me all the time," Son said.

According to Son, that is why it is necessary to honk. Partly because of the reflexive habit of drivers. Knowing that when the horn sounds, it will attract complaints from passersby, but from his perspective, Son sees it as necessary.

Son also agreed that the use of air horns should be minimized. Even when sitting in the cabin, the driver honking the horn is extremely noisy.

Tired of wearing green lights, just answering the phone

Mr. Thanh Long (residing in Thu Duc City), a technology car driver, said that there were times when he did not want to honk but still had to. He said that he struggled, rolling little by little on Truong Chinh Street before turning onto Cong Hoa Street (Tan Binh District), but when he reached the intersection of Cong Hoa - Tan Ky Tan Quy - Le Tan Quoc, the traffic was jammed.

He waited and waited, passed two traffic lights but still couldn't "get through". Finally, when the light turned green and it was his turn to go, his car was blocked by a male shipper. This person was calmly talking on the phone.

"We waited forever for the green light to come, but he was wearing the green light and was on the phone. Aren't you impatient? What would you do if you didn't squeeze him in that situation? Don't even mention having to roll down your window to warn him. It's so hard, because if you meet an aggressive person, it's a mess," said Mr. Long.

For technology car driver Quoc Thanh (living in Tan Binh district), honking comes from many reasons. Often seeing people signaling left and then turning right, not signaling and then suddenly turning as if there was no one around is extremely dangerous, he is forced to honk.

In cases where people carelessly use their phones while driving, they are not focused and the car swerves, causing the people behind to be extremely scared and hear warning sirens.

"If you go quickly and come back quickly, what else can you say? Who wants to make noise? It's tiring. Honking too much will result in 1 star from the customer. If the customer comments again, the app will be locked and you'll be hungry," Thanh laughed.

Mr. Thanh confided that he was very afraid of pedestrians jumping over fences and crossing the street recklessly, so he honked just to warn them.
