Goodbye "Spider-Man" Gianluigi Buffon

Báo Vĩnh LongBáo Vĩnh Long08/08/2023

Considered one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, Gianluigi Buffon finally bid farewell to his goalkeeping career at Parma. The passion and desire to play and contribute never faded for the Italian legend, until the signs of age caught in his way.

This news has left fans truly disappointed, as Buffon had previously announced he would continue playing football until the 2026 World Cup and would play for Parma until his contract with the club expires in June 2024. However, a series of injuries during the past season, along with Parma's failure to qualify for Serie A next season, led the veteran goalkeeper to decide to terminate his contract with his former club and retire at the age of 45.

Unlike his contemporaries, throughout his long career spanning nearly three decades, goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has become a symbol of resilience and enduring strength. One of the driving forces behind his many successes is his love for football. During his peak years, the legendary Italian goalkeeper's strengths were his superb reflexes in one-on-one situations and his quick, decisive ball handling in the penalty area.

Buffon's consistent performance has helped him win countless titles at all levels throughout his 28-year professional career. These include 10 Serie A titles, 6 Coppa Italia titles, and the 2006 World Cup with the Italian national team. He has also won numerous individual accolades, including 13 Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year awards and a place in Juventus' All-Time XI. Buffon was also voted the best goalkeeper in the world in 2006, 2007, and 2017.

Throughout his 28-year professional career, Buffon played for three clubs: Parma (1995-2001, 2021-2023) – where he began his football career after graduating from their youth academy; his peak years at Juventus (2001-2018, 2019-2021); and one season with PSG (2018-2019). The legendary Italian national team goalkeeper rejoined Parma in 2021 as a free agent. Last season, despite not playing regularly due to injury, Buffon still holds the record for most appearances in Serie A with 657 matches, along with 124 appearances in the Champions League and 176 appearances for the Italian national team.
