This decision was made based on an urgent meeting on the afternoon of June 21 chaired by Deputy Director of Tan Son Nhat International Airport Nguyen Nam Tien to propose a form of handling for taxi units violating operations at the airport. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Southern Airport Authority, Tan Son Nhat International Airport Police Station and related functional departments; along with two violating taxi units.
"These two units have greatly affected the reputation, image and brand of Tan Son Nhat International Airport," said a representative of Tan Son Nhat International Airport, and requested the two violating transport business units to comply with regulations.
Previously, on June 20, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam sent a dispatch to the Southern Airport Authority and Tan Son Nhat International Airport regarding strengthening security and order and handling illegal taxis and taxi fare fraud at Tan Son Nhat Airport.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam requested the Southern Airports Authority to review and supplement the plan to strengthen inspection and supervision of the provision of services by taxi and technology car companies licensed to operate at the airport and to strictly handle cases where company employees solicit or force customers to pay higher prices or hand them over to competent authorities when detecting taxi price fraud.
Tan Son Nhat International Airport reviews the list of licensed passenger transport businesses by car; regulations on exploitation and business of passenger transport by car at the airport; it is necessary to adjust regulations, rules or contract content to have appropriate handling forms, increase deterrence and high prevention for businesses and vehicle drivers who commit fraud on issued service prices.
On June 19, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport Inspectorate coordinated with other inspection units to discover violations by two taxis operating at Tan Son Nhat airport when they used auxiliary switches to raise fares 10 times higher than the actual fare.
Specifically, a taxi belonging to Saigon Tourist Transport Joint Stock Company (not related to Saigon Tourist Group) was discovered to have 2 auxiliary switches located below the driver attached to the taximeter. The units requested the car to run from Tan Son Nhat International Airport to Tran Quoc Hoan Street and back to the international terminal, with the actual price being 54,000 VND; however, when the switches were pressed, the meter showed 540,000 VND.
On the same day, a taxi of Saigon Taxi Transport Company Limited was also discovered by the authorities using an auxiliary switch located under the driver's gear lever attached to the fare meter. Each time the car shifted into or out of gear, the fare increased by 3,000 VND/time. The car ran from the international terminal to Tran Quoc Hoan Street and back, when the meter switch was activated, the fare was 420,000 VND.
