According to Sky Sports , Liverpool spent £116 million to acquire Wirtz, making him the most expensive signing in Premier League history, surpassing the record held by Moises Caicedo when he joined Chelsea for £115 million.
Furthermore, the German playmaker has become the third most expensive player in world transfer history, behind only Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. These two players made history when they joined PSG for £200 million and £163 million respectively.
After officially joining Liverpool, Wirtz couldn't hide his excitement: “I am very happy and proud. I have been waiting for this moment for a long time. I want to challenge myself in a completely new environment and the Premier League is the ideal destination. I've heard from many people that this place is great for me, every stadium is top-class, every match is exciting. I'm looking forward to my debut.”

Wirtz beamed with joy on his debut for his new club. |
Wirtz is the latest new signing to arrive at Liverpool this summer under manager Arne Slot, reuniting with former teammate Jeremie Frimpong. While at the German club, Wirtz established himself as one of the world's brightest young talents. He made his Bundesliga debut at 17 years and 15 days old, scoring his first goal just weeks later against Bayern Munich and quickly becoming a key player for Leverkusen.
Despite a serious injury in 2022, Wirtz made a strong comeback, playing a major role in Leverkusen's glorious 2023/24 season, helping them win a domestic double and reach the Europa League final, while remaining unbeaten in the Bundesliga. Last season, although Leverkusen failed to replicate that success, Wirtz still shone brightly with 6 goals in 9 Champions League matches.
To date, he has made 31 appearances for the German national team, scoring 7 goals, including 2 goals at Euro 2024, where he continued to demonstrate his class on the international stage.
Wirtz will join Liverpool in July to prepare for the pre-season. When asked about his ambitions at Anfield, he stated: “I want to win every trophy every year. I know the team won the Premier League last season and I want to repeat that with them, go further in the Champions League. I am very ambitious.”
Wirtz's official shirt number at Liverpool will be announced at the end of the summer, but with his talent and fighting spirit, the German player promises to become an indispensable name in the "Reds'" quest for glory next season.
