Strengthening support for ethnic minority women and children

In the period of 2021-2025, Can Tho City Women's Union effectively implemented Project 8 "Implementing gender equality and solving urgent issues for women and children". This is a project under the National Target Program for socio-economic development of ethnic minority and mountainous areas. The activities of Project 8 basically follow the requirements of the Program's content orientation, are comprehensive, specific, practical, and suitable for local reality.

Leaders of Can Tho City Women's Union awarded prizes to collectives and individuals with outstanding achievements in implementing Project 8, phase 2021-2025.

According to Ms. Le Thi Thuy Hang, Vice President of the Can Tho City Women's Union, the Project's activities have promoted the core role of the Union in protecting women and children, promoting gender equality in ethnic minority areas. The project not only provides material support but also contributes to changing awareness and behavior in the community, creating a solid foundation for sustainable development. The Unions at all levels have promoted propaganda, integrating Project 8 activities with the core tasks of the Union; mobilizing cadres, members, and ethnic minority women to actively participate in the movement. The models and activities of the Project have been welcomed and supported by members and women and highly appreciated by local Party committees and authorities. The Can Tho City Women's Union has established and operated 4 "Leaders of Change" club models at the Ethnic Boarding School and a number of communes and wards in the city, helping members improve their knowledge, skills, and self-reliance in life...

In addition, 5 "Community Communication Teams" were established to promote propaganda, contributing to eliminating prejudices and gender stereotypes in families and communities, backward cultural practices and some urgent social issues for women and children... At the same time, the Association pays attention to supporting livelihoods, developing economic models for ethnic minority women, taking care of their material and spiritual lives, contributing to sustainable poverty reduction. The Association maintains livelihood models; livelihood groups; cooperatives managed by women are supported to apply 4.0 technology in production and connecting product consumption, notably the models "Mobilizing ethnic women to develop household economy", "Co Do Craft Village Cooperative"... The Association has also built club models for ethnic minority women, operating effectively, such as: Ethnic Women's Club to comply with the Party's policies and guidelines, the State's laws associated with the awareness of developing household economy; The club has no relatives who have violated the law…

The Women's Union of Co Do district has implemented many practical activities to help members and ethnic minority women improve their qualifications in all aspects, affirming their position in the family and society. The Union mobilizes resources to support women in developing production, improving income and living standards, and replicating typical advanced women in patriotic emulation movements, production, business... The "Leader of Change" Club and the "Community Communication Teams" deployed in many communes in the district are important factors in raising awareness, contributing to eliminating gender prejudices, gender stereotypes, and cultural practices that are harmful to women and children.

At the Ethnic Boarding School, the “Leaders of Change” Club aims to build a fair, friendly and unprejudicededucational environment. The Club establishes small propaganda groups in classes and dormitories, directly sharing and guiding students to understand and practice gender equality in their studies, daily activities and communication. The Club’s activities have equipped students with useful knowledge and skills, creating conditions for them to experience, develop their strengths and participate in healthy recreational activities…

In Tan An Ward, Area 8 was chosen by the People's Committee and the Women's Union of the Ward to establish a "Community Communication Team". The team diversifies forms of propaganda to promote the elimination of gender stereotypes, build a living environment, and safe areas for women and children. In addition, coordinate activities to help people understand the provisions of the law on gender equality, take good care of children, teach good children, develop the economy, improve the quality of life, ensure the voice and real participation of women and children in socio-economic development activities...

According to the Can Tho City Women's Union, in order for Project 8 to be more effective, the Union will strengthen propaganda, promote the role of grassroots Union officials and prestigious people in the ethnic community; continue to maintain and promote the effectiveness of good models and practices and mobilize maximum resources to support women and children in ethnic minority areas, ensuring that policies are accessed quickly and promptly. At the same time, step up the monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of the Project's activities, have solutions suitable to the practical life of ethnic women, contributing to building a prosperous, happy, progressive and civilized family...
